Speed Skating ISU World Cup 2017 - 2018

Recommended Posts

Women's 3.000m and 5.000m quota, according to my calculations:

  • Maximum quota per NOC = 3 (3.000m) / 2 (5.000m);
  • Maximum quota for this distance = 24 (3.000m) / 12 (5.000m);
  • Maximum number of female speed skaters in Pyeongchang = 80.

This is an overview of how the quota for the women have been allocated based on my calculations. There could of course be errors in this.

Country 500 1.000 1.500 3.000 5.000 Mass Start Team Pursuit Total
:AUT  1 1 1     1   4
:BEL      1         1
:BLR      1 1 1 1   4
:CAN  3 3 3 3 2 2 Yes 10
:CHN  3 3 3 2   2 Yes 8
:CZE  1 2 2 2 1 1   8
:DEN            1   1
:EST            1   1
:FIN  1             1
:GER  2 3 2 2 1 1 Yes 10
:ITA  2     1   2   5
:JPN  3 3 3 3 2 2 Yes 10
:KAZ  1 1 1         3
:KOR  3 3       2 Yes 8
:NED  3 3 3 3 2 2 Yes 10
:NOR  1 2 2 1       6
:POL  1 1 3 3   1 Yes 8
:RUS  3 3 3 2 2 2 Yes 10
:SUI            1   1
:TPE  1 1 1         3
:USA  3 3 3 1 1 2   8
Total 32 32 32 24 12 24 8 120

In case a NOC has been allocated quota in all events, the maximum number of quota is 10. In all other cases, the maximum is 8.

120 quotas have been allocated, but no more than 80 female skaters will be allowed to compete in Pyeongchang. However, if for the men, the respective IOC Quota target number of 100 is not reached according to the qualifying system, the unused number of quota places will be credited and added to the quota of the women.

I think there will be only around 80 athletes anyways, for example:

  • I'd expect :AUT :BLR :KAZ :TPE only to send one athlete who will skate all distances for which they have earned a quota.
  • All 10 :GER quota places have been earned by only 4 different skaters (Dannhauer, Hirschbichler, Dufter and Pechstein);
  • :CZE will send no more than 3 skaters normally (Sáblíkova, Erbanova, Zdráhalova);
  • :USA Bergsma and Bowe will skate multiple distances;
  • :NOR will be represented by Njåtun and Bøkko only, normally speaking;
  • Both Takagi sisters have earned :JPN a quota in 4 different distances.

Is it actually possible that the Netherlands will go into Pyeongchang without any clear gold medal favorite? If Bloeman grabs 5000m/10000m golds then they might struggle indeed!

Okay, men's pursuit is a lock I guess. :p

Man has Ted-Jan ever improved over the past couple years. World record holder in both the 5000 and the 10000, just incredible.

Speed Skating Canada sure is lucky his dad happened to have been born in New Brunswick xD

I mean, it depends which team shows up. The Netherlands pursuit team has looked like amateurs in two of the three events.

FWIW I think Koen Verweij is a heavy favorite since Yuskov and Kulizhnikov probably won't be allowed to compete (even though Yuskov's doping ban was kinda BS).
