Aaaaaaaaarg, god damnit, how did the Austrians f*ck this race up so badly. Both franz and mayer had superb 2nd split times but on the section where everyone gains time on jansrud one misses a gate the other one loses 5 tenths (as a comparison, he lost 9 tenths on theaux and he didn't even make a big mistake, he just skied bad). There are two Austrians who could have won this but instead we don't even have a podium (which reichelt missed by two hundreds btw)

Reichelt missed it by 0,14 :p

If anyone wondered, Brice Roger is the higest bib to reach the podium since Hannes Trinkl who won a Super G race in 1993 with bib 51 :woohoo:

What about Ivica Kostelic? He had higher bib in 2001 in Aspen and he won that race.

Yeah, Bib 64 I believe.

Also Marc Berthod had Bib 60 or something when he won slalom in Adelboden (2007).

I think I remember reading about a downhill in the mid 1980s where the TV company broadcasting the race switched off their cameras after bib 40 (or about that) went down and missed one of the low ranked Austrians win the race.

Maybe Morzine in 1986?

the Val Gardena Downhill has a long history of winners started with very high numbers...

Markus Foser in 1993 won with #66 (ahead of Werner Franz, AUT with #52), Max Rauffer (GER) in 2004 won with #46...

and they're not the only ones...

Tina Maze won her first downhill in st moritz I think in 2008 with bib 47. 3rd place was lara gut who also had a bib around 40 who got her first world cup podium back then and even would have won if she hadn't crashed on the finshing streight falling over the finish line
