Saturday's Val Thorens Audi FIS Ski Cross Alps Tour competition cancelled due to weather

Despite a massive effort by organizers and officials, the second of two Audi FIS Ski Cross Alps Tour competitions slated for Val Thorens was cancelled on Saturday due to persistent snow, fog, and wind.

With more than 30cms of snow blanketing the course over night and steady snowfall throughout the day in the lead-up to the scheduled start time, teams of slippers and colour crews were forced to fight Mother Nature with all their resources. Unfortunately, on Saturday it was a losing battle.

FIS ski cross race director Martin Fiala praised the efforts of all hand who were striving to make Saturday's competition a success.

"FIS would like to thank the organizers and volunteers in Val Thorens for their hard work and determination today," said Fiala, "Though we were not able to overcome today's challenges, Val Thorens has proven once again this week why it is one of the premier ski cross venues in the world. Now we look forward to the next stage of the Cross Alps Tour in Arosa (SUI), and to returning to Val Thorens once again next season."

The programme in Val Thorens had already undergone one change when the first of the two races, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved forward one day to Thursday to accommodate for the forecasted storm that would eventually lead to Saturday's cancellation. In hindsight, that decision proved to be the correct one, as there is a very real possibility there would have been no competition at in Val Thorens without that move.

Due to the compact nature of the 2017 Cross Alps Tour schedule, there is little possibility of a rescheduling of the Val Thorens race at one of the other three Cross Alps Tour venues this December. However, other options for making up today's cancelled competition will be explored in the coming days.

The next stage of the 2017 Cross Alps Tour will take place in Arosa (SUI) on Tuesday, December 12, with an exciting nighttime sprint format competition slated to get underway under the lights at 20:15 CET. Qualifications will take place on Monday, December 11, at 17:30.

    • (Quiet gaming, zero social pressure, no calls, no KYC… just peace.) As someone who’s definitely on the introverted side, I’ve always hated anything that feels intrusive — long registrations, support calls, verification uploads, or sites that spam you into interacting. So over the past year, I tested a bunch of crypto casinos specifically to see which ones are introvert-friendly: ✔ no forced KYC ✔ fast payouts (so no long back-and-forth with support) ✔ clean, quiet UI ✔ no pop-ups and no social pressure ✔ easy deposits ✔ minimal interaction needed Below is what actually worked for me. ⭐ My Top Crypto Casinos for Introverts (Real Testing Results) Casino Why It’s Introvert-Friendly Speed Link JackBit Quiet UI, no KYC, instant payouts 7 min 👉 Play at JackBit BetWhale Low-pressure bonuses, simple layout 14 min 👉 Play at BetWhale BitStarz Fast cashouts, no forced conversations 9 min 👉 Play at BitStarz ThunderPick Clean minimalist design 18 min 👉 Play on ThunderPick 7Bit Casino Extremely chill, no notifications 22 min 👉 Play at 7Bit 1. • It's not a coincidence that a lot of the matches that are earlier in the day are in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas where they have roofs.  And most of the games in the outdoor stadiums are later in the day.
    • The best athletes will all be there anyway – it's easier to get a spot in the top 10-15. Only the great champions were ahead of Gismondi today.
    • They are not "oppressed enough" to be mention here.
    • And remember the Olympic Paradox - it is slightly easier to get a medal at the Olympics than at a World Cup because in the Olympics the numbers of racers from the powerful nations are capped at 4.
    • Jimmy Mariano  basketball. 84 years old.   Member of the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Flag bearer for the Philippine delegation at those Games.
    • Franchi had a similarly impressive performance at the 2023 World Championships on the same distance but later she completly missing. I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
    • The last day was a great success, for first. Secondly, even 20 medals are fewer than the 22 from 2023 and 34 from 2021
