The Team USA players listen to their national anthem after winning the bronze medal game at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Team USA trimmed its camp roster for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship to 24 players. One more player will be cut on 24th December.

The team will continue its camp in Oshawa and play the last exhibition game against the Czech Republic in Kingston on 23rd December before the final roster containing 20 skaters and three goaltenders will be announced.

With four days left until the start of the World Juniors three forwards were cut from the current roster: Brock Boeser, Logan Brown and Alex DeBrincat.

“There are still some decisions to be made, but as a staff we are pleased by the team's continued chemistry and unity that head coach Bob Motzko first started back in August.”

The current roster includes three players from last year’s bronze-winning team including defencemen Chad Krys, Charlie McAvoy and forward Colin White.

ROAD TO U20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

2017 IIHF World Junior Championship

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More rosters named

USA, Czechs, Swiss, Latvia make cuts

More rosters named

Team USA and Switzerland named their final rosters. Among the returnees will be Swiss goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe (pictured against Auston Matthews last year in Helsinki).

Four more teams have announced their rosters before the player registration in the night before the start of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Last year’s bronze medallist USA announced its final roster including three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. Defenceman Chad Krys was the last player cut from the roster today.

“We're excited about this group of players and the way in which they will maximize the style of hockey that head coach Bob Motzko wants the team to play,” said Jim Johannson, general manager of the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team and assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey.

“The talent level in the United States is among the best in the world and the difficulty we had identifying this year's roster speaks to that. These players earned their way on to this roster and we're looking forward to the tournament getting underway.”

The Czech Republic trimmed its camp roster to 25 players. Defenceman Libor Hajek and forward Lukas Andel will have to travel home, forward Dominik Lakatos will miss the event due to injury. The roster now includes three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 14 forwards.

The coaching staff plans not to register the full roster in the beginning and keep roster spots open. The final decision will be made after the first two games in the preliminary round when two skaters will be cut from the camp roster and the last players be registered.

12 of the players compete in the Czech pro or junior leagues, 11 in North America and one each in Finland and Sweden. Eight players of this extended roster have played in the World Juniors before. For David Kase and Michael Spacek it will be the third participation.

Switzerland made its final cuts to trim the roster to its final size of 23 players. The roster includes three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. Defenceman Tobias Geisser and forward Philipp Kurashev didn’t make the final roster and will have to leave the team.

Denis Malgin will not join the squad as he hasn’t been released by the Florida Panthers.

20 of the players join from Swiss pro or junior teams while three play junior hockey abroad including prospective first-round draft pick Nico Hischier and Calvin Thurkauf in Canada, and Livio Stalder in Sweden. Six players were part of the team that finished in ninth place last year in Helsinki. For defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler it will be the third World Junior Championship. He also represented Switzerland in three U18 World Championships.

Latvia, the team promoted to the top division, made the last cuts on Christmas Eve as well. Defencemen Arturs Apfelbaums, Eduards Fjodorovs and Pauls Svars, as well as forwards Niks Kalnberzins, Reinis Martins Lejnieks, Haralds Strombergs and Aleksandrs Visockis will have to travel home.

Seven players from the team join from the domestic yough hockey system while the others play for junior teams abroad in Canada, the United States, Switzerland and Norway.
