Boxing Qualification for Summer Olympic Games 2016

Recommended Posts

This is just too painful for Togo. Wouldn't be surprised if he was robbed in at least in one of those fight.

One thing that REALLY annoys me are those "weakish" coutries that earn a bunch of quotas at continental qualifications. That's especially often the case at the American and African qualifications with the likes of Venezuela, Tunisia, Morocco etc etc. They qualify a bunch of athletes in wrestling or boxing for example and most of those athletes do nothing at the Olympics (if not all of them). It's a good thing that rowing for example no longer allows to qualify more than 1 boat per gender at continental regattas. Something similar should be done in boxing. For example, it would be good to have a rule that if a country already has 4 or more boxers qualified, then they can't earn a quota in box-off (unless the other nation in box-off also has 4 or more boxers). Everyone would still be able to qualify a lot of boxers, but they would have to "earn" it.

great championship for Morocco. I think that they can win two medals in boxing in Rio.

Maybe, but at least 5 Moroccan boxers will go out in round one. :p

Morocco steals the show in women's boxing.

Some countries really got hurt by the fact that there are only 3 quotas per category for Africa (in 2008 and 2012 Africa had 6 quotas per category for example). Ghana has one last chance to qualify in welterweight later today. In 2008 Ghana had 6 boxers, in 2012 4 boxers, so this is very bad for them. Now they have to defeat Algeria just to get this 1 quota.

maybe rules in 2020 as for taekwondo. or 4 men's and 2 women's. This is not good, only few nations won quotas here. Same will be in wrestling with Egypt,Tunisia,Nigeria and Algeria. And for canoeing sprint as well.

It should still be possible to qualify in all categories, off course. But there should be some quota limits at continental qualifications. If you want to have a lot of athletes you have to earn it on global stage.

Well, at least in canoeing C1 and C2 quotas should be interesting. :d Sao Tome and Principe should qualify based on their performance at World Championships last year, fingers crossed. Maybe even in C2.

I fully agree with the first point. Weightlifting and Taekwondo have got their qualification spot on in terms of quality, quantity and diversity because they have limits. If other sports (Boxing, Shooting, Wrestling) were to follow this model then there could be more competition within continents for quota and a more diverse range of countries will qualify - growing the sports in smaller nations.

I disagree, why should an athlete be not only the best at their event for their nation, but be better than someone in a different event? It opens up corruption (how can you measure whether someone is better in the light flyweight vs. the bantamweight?), weakens the overall field and could shrink the interest of the sport in some nations.

    • Yep, that was really unfortunate, but well, such things happens. Anyway this amount of lugers is really impressive.   Congrats and good luck at the Games
    • Yeah, Qualifying a team for the summer olympics is completely out of the question. Not going to happen for a long time. In Sydney 2000 we had 3 teams W Basketball, M Football & M Water Polo, it was already insane and this was even in a totally different era. Nowadays it is just Utopian. We have none to be at a high level in Europe to aspire for a qualification to the Olympics.   W Handball is really the most obvious chance in a long shot. The U17 girls showed last summer that it is possible, who knows maybe in Brisbane if the planets allign well.    Paris 2024 was a nightmare I do not want to remember. The worst games I experienced in my life. point.
    • Khm, do we know the fate of the  license in pairs? I did not see confirmation of their entry.   If they fail  must get full license (team + individual) and one more place for team event will be available, am I correct?
    • Honestly, we did not expect more than 8. 2 additional places happened just becaues your double could not grab it due to the injury(?).
    • Vivat Slovakia    But in all seriousness, it's been repeatedly stated how important it is to qualify in a team event for the next Summer Olympics. However, I have no idea if we even have a realistic chance.   We only have one fewer individual athlete competing this year than we did in Paris, so individual quota spots aren't the main issue. Where can we find a competitive team, like we do in hockey? Maybe the women's handball team could start something big, but that's still far in the future, very likely unachievable in just two years.   And to be clear, as horrific as our medal tally from Paris looked, those were some of the unluckiest Olympics for Slovakia I have ever seen. Finishing in the top six seven times (!) is absolutely insane.
