There were two Skielbreid sisters, except Ann was much weaker. Then there was Gro Marit Istad: a good shooter but weak in cross-country skiing. Italy once had Natalie Santer, then Ponza.

It wasn't once the case that biathlon was mainly a sport practiced in the former USSR and their friendly countries: e.g. DDR?

In the 60's I think it was USSR, Norway, Finland, Sweden... DDR came to prominence in the 70's into the 80's, when they were running on the premium gas

But it seems to us that Norway wasn't as strong in Lillehammer 1994 as it was later? And not just in women's events. Generally, until 2000, Norway was much weaker in women's biathlon and women`s cross-country skiing. I remember in the 1990s, Italy's biggest rivals, Belmondo and di Centa, were Russia, when Norway somewhere further back and only in the classic style. Bente Martinsen- Skari, this is their first really strong girl in cross country, just about 2000, just like Liv Grete Skielbreid- Pioree in women`s biathlon at similar times.

Do you think, that is there any hope that thanks to the popularity of Haaland and football in general in Norway in recent years, winter sports such as biathlon or cross-country skiing will lose a little bit, becouse that?

It's an interesting question, Norway is certainly expanding their efforts into a number of new sports. So, that cannot help but to peal off a few more natural athletes. I know their training methods are kinda rocking the world in a number of summer endurance sports.

I can't really speak to they dynamics of their development program. Their men's nordic programs largely always seem to be ridiculously deep, overwhelmingly so the last decade or so.
