Always excited for figure skating.  Can Ilia Malinin :USA land his million quads in a routine?  We'll see!

  • 3 weeks later...

The Japanese women go 1-2-3 for the Women's program, leaving Isabeau Levito :USA in fourth.  The Japanese skaters all had amazing skates, and gold medalist Nakai Ami is just 17 years old!

Gold - Nakai Ami :JPN

Silver - Sakamoto Kaori :JPN

Bronze - Sumiyoshi Rion :JPN

Ilia Malinin :USA is just at another level.  I did notice that he left some triples out there...but I imagine they will all be quads by the time Milano rolls around.  (His free program was worth more points than two skaters' short+free combined.)

And Adam Siao Him Fa :FRA made it back on the podium after not having the best of short programs, and Lukas Britschgi :SUI almost clawed his way back.  Andrew Torgachev  :USA likewise redeemed himself in the second skate.  Looking forward to seeing more from these guys.

I so love watching Alysa Liu and Chock/Bates as they skate...love seeing Liu's emotions come out.  She's so graceful and confident (and she won the SP without doing the 3 Axel).  Chock and Bates own the ice, and they're so fun to watch.  Hoping for a good second skate tomorrow!  :USA

    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
