Weightlifting IWF World Championships 2025

Looks like Karlos scares his opponents even before the competition starts :d We are going to have only 7 lifters in group A today, as multiple time medalists Fares El Bakh, Revaz Davitadze and Vallenilla all have withdrawn from the WCH.

Apparently Messo Hassona picked up an injury but in this sport you always can doubt these kind of news

the whole Venezuelan team including Vallenilla withdrew from the competition, I assume this has something to do with the current political tension there.

but at least about Davitadze we can say this for certain :p, he just received a 4 years ban from CAS few days ago. looks like Georgians tried to get away from a positive test from couple years ago but WADA/CAS blocked their escape way.

so the stage is set for the Kosovar hero to beat Karlos and win the gold :d

I wonder how he even found Kosovo?! :d I assume he put up an ad on a hiring website, something like:

I'm an ex Olympic Champion, I'm super arrogant, I coach myself, I don't give a shit about anything else, I'm The God of weightlifting.

Really glad with Moeini's performance, beating Nasar in Snatch and breaking the WR is something to remember for him. he wasn't expected to win a medal in total but did much better than expectations

but on the other hand, once again our coaches threw away another medal with their stupid decisions. Aalipour was supposed to finish 2nd behind Nasar but finished 4th with some strange attempts.

Iran is probably the only county in the world that still cares about the team ranking :wall: therefore not bombing out and collecting team points is always the #1 priority for our coaches. they always sacrifice one attempt to make sure the guy doesn't bomb out. and that cost our weightlifters so many medals so far.

Not as smooth competition as expected for Karlos, but thankfully he got the job done. Having two misses in Snatch was surprising. His coach mentioned afterwards, that they don't know what exactly happened yet, but could be because they are practicing a new technique.

team sports are different

however, I'm not saying that's good, but tbh to me it's about giving sense to a sport being "global" (and being at the Olympics) or just being a one place affair and living by itself (like the American Football, for instance...there would be no reason to make it an Olympic sport...oh, well, they actually did it )

right now, table tennis, diving and weightlifting (at least among the women) have a problem of competitiveness and have to find a way to compensate that

since you mention table tennis

another thing that also gives more medals to the nation that is dominant in a sport is the existence of team events, e.g. in Table tennis who is going to win any team event? Answer= China

Or mixed events also since the dominant nation has probably the best athletes in both genders

Khianoush and Kosovo, what a story.

World is just plain dumb.

I wonder - what drives him to compete in his age? He cant be any better. He might damage his persona even more, but I suppose he doesnt have much consideration left.

I know the host nation :NOR was pleased to snag a gold with Solfrid Koanda in the W 86kg yesterday. :)

And another bronze for :USA with Mary Theisen-Lappen in the W +86kg (also bronze in the C&J)!  We have one more athlete Aaron Williams in the Men's +110kg competition happening now, but judging by the live results, he won't be a medal contender.

Also in the M 94kg competition, the athlete from :COL in the B group Jokser Albornoz ended up with the bronze overall, including a bronze in the Snatch, and a silver in the C&J.

She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
    • Idea (that I don't want to mess with right now, but someone else can steal the idea): Could feed the docs from LA28 + Paris 2024 through AI and see what it says.  (Would just take downloading them, perhaps merging them for ease of upload, and passing it through.)
    • If you have time would love to see a sport by sport overview of the changes/new sports
    • Slowly going through the documents.   Looks like canoe slalom qualifiers will be a bit different. More kayak cross quotas which will let nations to essentially qualify two kayakers.
    • How about we choose either Rome or Milano  I hate this timeline we have entered of multiple host cities / countries. The football World Cup became ludicrous, we don't need the Olympics to join them. At least not more than they already are.
