just found out there will be some from of qualification for the Taekwondo competition in Nagoya. only 16 athletes can participate in each event.

 

The Asian Championship in Mongolia this month will act as the sole qualifier

 

top 7 from each weight (Olympic and non-Olympic) + 1 host quota + 1 wildcard = 16

quarterfinal losers will be ranked based on their QF match result. (3 of them will qualify)

Do you know if all sports have one? I have seen it for surfing for ex. It would be weird for some to have it, while others did not.

most probably not all of them but some

 

I find about some sports when I hear here and there some of our national federations talk about it. but the OCA didn't bother to publish anything collectively. 

 

all team sports have one obviously but for individual sports I can confirm Surfing, Sport climbing, Taekwondo, Gymnastics (at least Artistic part) and MMA have a qualification system. but I assume there are more.

 

I think maybe they had a number in mind for each sport and since more countries (than expected) registered for some sports they created a qualification system to keep the numbers low. just my guess though
