Strange when in this situation Russian wins medal for us but always nice. We can have 3rd best WOG in our history.

maybe he will be renamed as Władek for the Olympics?

there are two kind of athletes - those who stay in Russia and those who compete abroad only like tennis players and NHL players.

domestic athletes didn't say any word, they are very quiet and never speak about politics, so it was easy to shut them. there was a case of Violetta and Serger Bidas who moved to USA and they were claimed like traitors, but that's all. I don't know any athletes who were punished while they stay in the country, although there are huge lists of punished writers, artists etc

althletes abroad for some reason are not punished. those like Daria Kasatkina or Nikita Zadorov who spoke publicly on YouTube are still mentioned in news like athletes to be proud of.

but I guess if anyone will speak in Western media, that will be a disaster for them, they won't return back

From what I remember, Gamova- former volleyball player posted such pacifist posts in instagram at the beginning of the war, but without criticizing the Russian authorities. The rest really kept quiet, apart from some people who strongly supported the regime, e.g. the skier Stepanova ( I don't know if she did it out of stupidity or opportunism, but I think that  she thanks to this she became very popular in Russia and I think she even has some sports programs on TV?).

yeah, there were some at the beginning (also Andrey Rublev, Fedor Smolov) but most of them didn't proceed. in 2023-2024 there was a campaign against artists, musicians and writers who protested in early 2022, but it didn't touch athletes for some reason. well, there's also a case of one former football player Igor Denisov who critisised authorities and now works as just a children coach

According to our commentator that is how he already calls himself at least.

And what do Dutch journalists say about this skater? For me his progress is a big sensation. It was more said that this young Czech could dominate in the future.

That he is a nice surprise of the past weeks. But also not on the level of Jilek yet in terms of expectations :p

They also said it's nice to have two young people to challenge Ghiotto for next year, that may take him down a little tiny bit from his like 90% gold medal favourite position :p

And how do you see Ghiotto's chances in the 5 km? After this season, it look weak, even more so if Roest returns.

Definitely has a chance, but the 5k has quite a few riders with a decent chance. I'd say Eitrem is the favourite and as for the Dutch, it depends on whether eternal question mark Roest is injury-free and whether or not Huizinga finally is able to at least for once transport his incredible Heerenveen performances to any track outside of Heerenveen.

Up to a certain point I was hoping that Ghiotto would be the new Nils van der Poel of 2022, but this season has worried me a bit: no progress in the 5 km + a small win yesterday in the 10 km. I thought that he would break the track record yesterday and win more clearly. Ghiotto was definitely in better shape in February than at the end of the season.

Conditions really weren't that great for track records yesterday though, he had a more than excellent race.
