Madeline Schizas had a great day at figure skating worlds and sits in sixth after the short program. She's officially earned one women's quota on figure skating but could give Canada the opportunity to send a skater to the final qualification event if she finishes in the top 10

I thought Canada qualifies two athletes if she finishes in top 10?

No, but it would give Canada the chance to earn a second quota at the final qualifying competition.

To get two or three quotas from Worlds you need two or three skaters / pairs to qualify for the free skate.

Not quite. You can only earn two quotas if you have two or three skaters in the free program. Canada only has one so they'll get the chance to qualify another through the final qualifier.

It’s just an extra step to make sure the countries with spots have that many capable entries. Sadovsky had to do that to go to Beijing 2022.

They used to do it at Nebelhorn in conjunction with that, but now I guess they’re having a specific qualifier

As long as our nominee skates reasonably, I don’t think it will be an issue

But I thought if you only have one entry at worlds and they finish top ten you automatically get two at the Olympics ?

that’s what the cbc sports article is saying as well

Brenda Irving has also said if you don’t qualify a man, you can’t get a team

Sometimes they’re just wrong

Let’s just put it this way, if she’s not top ten we only get one

In CBC's defense, the ISU has arguably the most poorly worded qualification systems of any sports federation

The good news: All 3 pairs qualified for the free skate meaning that we would qualify 3 pairs outright if they met the performance requirements tomorrow in the free skate.

The bad news: Going to be tough to meet those requirements. To qualify 3 pairs, we would need our top two pairs teams to have a combined placement score of 13 or lower. Currently, our top two pairs have a combined placement score of 17.

    • this is not funny at all, pal
    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
