I did not realize Fontana competed (and medaled) in 2006 when she was only 15. Milano will be her 6th Olympics. Amazing.

the mixed relay is interesting so far; twelve nations qualify, twelve have 2 men and 2 women in qualifying position.

@Topicmaster1010is there a rankings for the mixed relay available?

My guess will be that the mixed relay rankings won't be necessary for qualification, but just in case, here's the current standings.

1. :CHN China - 10000

2. :NED Netherlands - 8500

3. :CAN Canada - 7225

4. :KOR Korea - 6141

5. :JPN Japan - 5220

6. :ITA Italy - 4437

7. :POL Poland - 3771

8. :USA United States - 3206

9. :KAZ Kazakhstan - 2725

10. :HUN Hungary - 2316

11. :GER Germany - 1969

12. :CRO Croatia - 1673

13. :FRA France - 1422

14. :GBR Great Britain - 1209

15. :CZE Czechia - 1028

16. :BEL Belgium - 874

16. :UKR Ukraine - 874

So right now, France and Belgium would qualify outside the top 12 while Germany and Croatia wouldn't.

The total of 60 men and 55 women puts us at 115 athletes which is three over the maximum quota limit. However, I would expect this number to go down by next weekend as skaters start to experience regression to the mean and skaters who put up an outlier performance fall out of qualification position. Lot's of surprising countries in qualifying position here It'll be interesting to see how long countries like Hong Kong, Slovakia, Taiwan and Thailand can hang on. You can find the Special Olympic Qualification Classifications (SOQC's) below.

Hey thank you so much for this. Sorry for maybe the dumb question, but why some countries with 'full teams' have 2 men quota (like usa), while others have 5 (italy, china, etc) and some have 3 (poland) or 4 (japan). Is this related to the athletes who compete at the World Tour? Thanks!

So this is how qualification works:

  • If you qualify a relay for one gender + 8 or 9 individual quotas for that gender, you get 5 quotas for that gender
  • If you qualify a relay for one gender + 7 individual quotas or less, you get 4 quotas
  • Otherwise, the number of quotas for that gender is the maximum amount of entries you have in one single event

So for the US, they've have 2, 1, and 2 men in qualifying position in the individual events but no relay so the maximum amount of quotas the men get is 2. The same thing can be said for Poland except they have 3 men in the 500m in qualifying position so their maximum amount of quotas is 3. Italy and China both have their men's relay teams in qualifying position and have the maximum 9 individual quotas so they get 5 quotas. Japan has their men's relay team in qualifying position but only has 7 individual quotas so they only get 4 quotas

pretty strange how the ISU is handling the Russians so far; omitted completely from the ranking lists except Anna Matveeva in the 1500m. At least they eventually put up rankings.

As far as I know russians are not fully reinstated. They are allowed to compete only in these 4 events to be able potentially get Olympic quoats. The rest of the season is closed for them.
