Cross-Country Skiing Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026

Very much looks like something went wrong with Brazil at the start of the U23 relay. I only counted 19 athletes after 1 minute or so instead of 20, they are listed as 'Started' but didn't get through the very first split yet (where the fastest time is 4 minutes, and that was like 5 minutes ago, no way they lost 5 minutes in that time, that's too much even for these standards).

That sucks quite badly and is a big blow to Brazil's chances to reach the top-30...come on, all that needed to happen for a nice amount of points was to finish. Dead last, far away, no problem, but...finish.

With the most amazing looks of disbelief I have ever seen at the finish and even now, like half an hour later :d

I love these kind of surprises, that's what sports is about for me.

And more - 19th place for :GBR Tabitha Williams, pretty sure that is our best ever female result in any global event.  And we're seeing a revival of :CAN after aboot 15 years of nothing much.

Yes, I do plan on making qualification posts for other sports as we get closer to the qualification deadlines. Mostly for rankings lists that aren't made public by the sports federations.

For now, you can find the biathlon rankings here and olympic allocation lists for freestyle skiing and snowboarding here

Thanks!

How come there are 2 quotas for TPE and 1 for GBR?

And Jesus Brazil, if only they had been like "oh ok, we are on the U23 relay start list, sure, we will actually start and pick up 35 free points".

Deep, deep sigh.

That's a mistake. Thanks for catching that.

Finally there's a Wikipedia page for the qualifying, but it's not entirely up-to-date yet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-country_skiing_at_the_2026_Winter_Olympics_–_Qualification

Brazil does have a male quota, due to Manex's 159 or so points in the sprint in Schilpario, but isn't mentioned in the list.

It also has this line, which I haven't seen before:

Quote

The remaining 10 quota places by gender will be assigned to NOCs that were not able to achieve a quota, granted all athletes have scored less than 300.00 FIS points at one FIS World Cup competition in the first World Cup period 2025/2026.

Is that like a safety net in case a country didn't get into the top-30 of the ranking and didn't get a basic quota? Hard one, because in that case it will be rather difficult to get under 300 points in a World Cup (assuming FIS would even allow them in with a wildcard), but interesting.

    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
    • I didn't buy any tickets, but didn't get the e-mail.   We bought tickets on my wife's account (earlier timeslot), but not 12, and she got the e-mail.

    • I am very curious.  We got extremely lucky in the first ticket drop, both my and my wife's emails were selected for relatively early time slots-- early enough that we bought our full allotment of tickets for good stuff.  Not swimming or gymnastics of course, but we were really pleased,  d   But today I received an email on one of those accounts saying that we were entered into the second drop because we hadn't used up our 12 ticket allotment.  I went back and counted-- twice-- and yes, we certainly did purchase 12 tickets on that account.      I am not sure I want any more!  Did this happen to anybody else?
