Finally no more weekly updates about that she might decide the next week. By Dopehaug

As was the quite clear plan before last season, so no changes there :p

So she activated just to retire right away...

No, she came back specifically for Trondheim. For the 50k, to be precise, that had always been the (announced) plan.

Why was Trondheim so important for her?

Home world championships, and the first time the women could do the 50k, which had always been her dream. Now that was possible and even in her own country, so she came back for that. From the beginning it was clear that going all the way to the Olympics was perhaps possible, but not the main plan :p

:yes Now its crystal clear.

Its always good to end the career at the Games but i dig her POV.

I will miss her, she is one of the legends, no matter that she's quite controversial. :)

  • 1 month later...

Does anyone remember if this rule was also last time around or is it something new?

Quote

2.1.3 Exceptions related to OWG qualification

Due to Qualification System for OWG Milano-Cortina 2026 athletes from NOCs without the basic quota are eligible to compete in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup 2025/26 period I under the following conditions:

• Competitors must have 800 FIS points and less in the FIS points list (distance or sprint) valid for the respective World Cup.

• Competitors can take part in all individual competitions in the World Cup period I, until they have reached the limit for the OWG basic quota (one result with 300 FIS points and less for men, 330 FIS points and less for women at one (1) individual competition).

• If an athlete reaches the result for the basic quota for the OWG then they can take part in other individual competitions during the respective World Cup weekend.

• If an athlete reaches the result for the basic quota for the OWG then they can take part in another World Cup weekend only if they meet the general World Cup entry requirements.

Think it's something new, none of the BLR/RUS athletes have been in the WC for years.  They've had their own circuit, so the next question is whether those events are going to be retrospectively counted for FIS Points, I guess.

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
