Her mother is Chinese. Her father is Croatian. She was born in Switzerland and represented that country until March 2024 before switching to New Zealand (probably to have a better chance of making the Olympics). One of the rare instances when a rich Western country actually loses an athlete (don't ask @hckošiceabout Hingisova and Bencicova here :p ).

She was born in New Zealand actually, Te Anau, South island and lived there for couple of years before moving to Switzerland.

Weirdly enough, Switzerland lost both Masarova and Sun. Well, Masarova isn't showing any signs she could be a factor, and let's hope Sun appears to be belated bloomer :d She certainly has decent game to do some damage.

Masarova still would be good for Switzerland, she'd be their highest ranked player now that Bencic is on maternity leave.

Why?

I find her to be fake and arrogant. There are many examples of her attitude/approach to the sport since winning the US Open that I have questioned (such as always firing coaches, questionable retirements from matches/tournaments, refusing to play qualifying at Roland Garros as if she is entitled to unlimited wildcards, and many more).

You don't have to go too far back, I mean even a few days ago she withdrew from mixed doubles which was obviously very controversial as it was Murray's last Wimbledon. She shouldn't have agreed to play with him if she wasn't willing to go through with it.

Also her fans and the British media have been unbearable anytime she's done well (which is rare but still), acting like she is the queen of the sport or something . I thought she was for sure supposed to have 10 GS by now the way they acted when she first became big? I mean even a few days ago they asked Sakkari how special it would be to play Raducanu at Wimbledon or something like that (I forgot exactly how they worded it), as if Raducanu is Serena and Sakkari is some unknown player in her first big tournament...I know that's not Emma's fault but it certainly doesn't help her cause but I'm sure she is happy to play along as long as they give her the big money...

Spot on @Monzanatorabout Gauff. She's had a horrible year so far in my opinion, every time I've watched her play she has been dreadful but she gets so many easy draws in every tournament and is able to somehow find her way in the latter stages of many tournaments before finally facing good opposition. I mean compare her draws to Swiatek's or Rybakina's for example and they are so so different!

:ITA Jasmine Paolini beat :CRO Donna Vekic in three sets to advance to her second GS final in a row.

Paolini was down 2-5 in the decider to Madison Keys the other day and only won this match when Keys got injured but well, she's truly making the most of her season run so far.

Donna Vekić played a great match and a great tournament. Unfortunately, she lost because of physical strength. She played more than 2 hours longer than Paolini on tournament,so it's like one more match. 🇭🇷🎾🔥💪

More than likely that she will be hammered in the final but...would Paolini be the shortest GS winner ever?

Maybe even already the shorter finalist in the Open Era?

:CZE Barbora Krejcikova beat :KAZ Elena Rybakina in three sets in the second SF. A complete random GS final line-up then. Most casual Wimbledon fans probably don't even know who the finalists are :p

Well, it's a GS champion against a GS finalist, so not that random per se, even if both lack stardom.

Krejcikova always seemed to be favoured to do something good in Wimbledon with her gamestyle, but has been inconsistent and derailed by injuries that this run is a bit surprising. I like Paolini and she reminds me a bit of Simona Halep's big summer in 2014, but Krejcikova should get this.

    • It's not a coincidence that a lot of the matches that are earlier in the day are in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas where they have roofs.  And most of the games in the outdoor stadiums are later in the day.
    • The best athletes will all be there anyway – it's easier to get a spot in the top 10-15. Only the great champions were ahead of Gismondi today.
    • They are not "oppressed enough" to be mention here.
    • And remember the Olympic Paradox - it is slightly easier to get a medal at the Olympics than at a World Cup because in the Olympics the numbers of racers from the powerful nations are capped at 4.
    • Jimmy Mariano  basketball. 84 years old.   Member of the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Flag bearer for the Philippine delegation at those Games.
    • Franchi had a similarly impressive performance at the 2023 World Championships on the same distance but later she completly missing. I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
    • The last day was a great success, for first. Secondly, even 20 medals are fewer than the 22 from 2023 and 34 from 2021
