Ice cross isn't so bad because it usually uses temporary venues.

But do they just ship them from somewhere else? I remember watching the Red Bull events years ago and that was always some expensive-looking big track a few meters above the city streets and everything :p

It would be cool to have a Winter Olympic sport out in the middle of the main host city instead of far away up in a mountain.

  • Speed skiing is the least interesting sport on this list. It's both incredibly dangerous and incredibly boring. I actually think it has a great chance at being included in 2030 because of where the Olympics are being held, but I don't think it will come back very often

Worth remenber it was a demonstration event back in 1992 and was not seen ever since. Most likely because one athlete died during training. I can see IOC vetto it.

About free-ride, two issues: you really need serious snow I guess, one can hardly do some real freeriding on one of those fake snow pistes that are generally fine for alpine skiing. Plus, isn't it freeride a kind of off-piste skiing? If so, I can hardly see them promote that extremely dangerous activity to a large public of recreational skiers...

It's backcountry skiing. Which is quite normal in North America (with many resorts having fairly large "in bounds" backcountry areas), not sure how it is in Europe. I certainly know a lot of people who do it recreationally.

While a speed skiier did die in 1992, it was not while doing speed skiing. He was warming up using regular slalom skis on a regular piste and he colided with a snow cat.

From what I’ve heard/understand from ski media, European resorts tend not to provide avalanche control on off-piste areas, even when “in bounds.”

I haven’t skied in Europe myself though.

I just watched a video of that...looks super cool!  And I like the idea of it being in the middle of the city.  (Also, here's another vote for ice climbing and cross-country/trail running.)

Do the IOC still have the rule that all sports in the Winter Games must be played on ice or snow?

Or did they get rid of it?
