Is that even surprising though?

Surely you know by now that I am never surprised when GB athletes fail to raise their game when it really matters. :d

:JPN Horigome out

Any other team and he would be on track to qualifying with this, 17th place here, 7th in the rankings. That’s a 10th place over all, right in the center of the 20 quotas with a semi in Budapest locking in that rank.

Except, there’s at least 4 other Japanese skaters above him in the combined rankings. All younger, hell Ginwoo Onodera was 11 when Horigome won and is now above him in the world rankings. His success in Tokyo igniting the sport for Japan is looking like his downfall for Paris.

Well he’s 40th in the Olympic Ranking, and he actually produced a solid score as well. It’s just that (unfortunately for him) everyone else was doing that as well.

:GBR Sky Brown has withdrawn from the Olympic Qualifying Series event in Shanghai ahead of women's park qualifying. She is recovering from knee injury and hopes to return for the 2nd event in Budapest.

I think is unfair that they would not let an athlete to act as a reserve in that case....

On an adjusted basis, he was 27th in the ranking (stripping out nations with more than 4 skaters) and finishing 27th here should net him 7420 points which would be enough to move him up to 24th but had he been able to get into the top 20/top 22, he would have been on the edge of getting a quota.

In my defence, I had been up since 3am and I'd perhaps lost the attention to detail when it became clear that :GBR weren't going to get a quota in the event :d

How many athletes will qualify from the WS and how much from each country? I want to know our chances if anyone has a clue

Max. 3 people from 1 country.: USA, BRA, AUSx 3. However, the previous ranking also counts here. It's quite complicated. According to my calculations, the 2nd Italian men will QO for today, who was 20th today,

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
