Someone on SwimSwam pointed out that the final of the men's 200m IM is on the same day as the heats of the mixed medley relay, so Apollo Hess was likely picked so they can rest Finlay Know that morning.

 

There is precedent for Swimming Canada picking someone specifically for the mixed medley relay, that was Javier Acevedo's only swim in Tokyo.

It's not like Hess was much slower than Knox in the breaststroke. He can swim the heats of both relays, maybe even the finals should he improve between now and the Olympics.

One of the editors at swimswam reached out to World Aquatics about Penny's situation and finally got a response.

 

Despite having the consideration time, she would not be allowed to swim the individual 100 free because she's a relay only athlete. So she needs the OQT.

 

However, if she doesn't get the OQT, one of Maggie or MSH would still be able to swim because they also both have the consideration time + an OQT in another event.
