Thoughts on the team announcement:

Savannah Stubley - Gets the nod over Demi-Jade Resztan for the 50Kg.  Stubley got to the semi-final in Colorado before losing out to :AUS Monique Suraci whereas Resztan lost her first bout. Stubley also competed in Busto-Arsizio but lost her first fight. Hopefully she can make more of a fight of it in Bangkok and be in the mix for one of the four quotas available.

Elise Glynn - No surprise in the 57Kg - Glynn got to the quarter-finals in Busto-Arsizio and recently won the USA Boxing International Invitational in Colorado where she beat Paris bound :BRA Jucielen Romeu in the final. The qualifying conditions in Bangkok should be easier as there are 4 quotas available compared to the two that were on offer in Italy.

Amy Broadhurst - Possibly the most controversial selection in the squad. Broadhurst gets the nod over both Shona Whitwell and Gemma Richardson for the 60Kg. Whitwell has had 2 opportunities to get to Paris and has lost in her opening bout both times. She competed in Colorado earlier this month and lost in the first round so it was always going to be difficult to justify selecting her for a third time. Gemma Richardson could feel a little hard done by - she got to the final in Colorado before losing to :CHN Yang Wen Lu. It's a bold decision by the selectors and I hope it works out for them.

Kiaran Macdonald - No surprise in the 51Kg class. Macdonald got to the quota fight in Italy and came up short against :KAZ Bibossinov. He should go into the 2nd qualifier as one of the favourites to get a quota if he can get a decent draw.

Owain Harris-Allan - Like Kieran Macdonald, Harris-Allan got to the quota fight in the 57Kg class in Busto-Arsizio. He got to the final in Colorado where he came up short against :BRA Luiz Oliveira - the same fighter who defeated him in the quota match in Italy.

Patris Mughalzai - He gets the nod over Reese Lynch in the 63.5Kg class. Mughalzai gets a second chance to book his spot in Paris after reaching the round of 32 in Busto-Arsizio. It's disappointing for Lynch who was making strong comeback after injury at last year's European Games but perhaps not surprising giving the pair fought in the semi-final of the Colorado event earlier this month.

Lewis Richardson - Selectors have kept the faith with Richardson who is picked ahead of Harris Akbar at 71Kg. Richardson fought in Italy but his campaign didn't last long as he was beaten in the first round by :IND Dev Nishant. Hopefully he can get a more favourable draw in Bangkok so that he has a chance to grow into the tournament.

Ramtin Musah - This is probably the most surprising selection as Musah is picked over Taylor Bevan for the 80Kg class. OK so Bevan lost in the first round in Busto-Arsizio but in Colorado, he got to the semi-finals whereas Musah lost in the first round.

Overall then I think we're sending a pretty strong squad and I can see us getting 3-5 quotas if we can get decent draws.

The whole way through i was going to ask how many you thought we could get, and then boom, got in their first anyways. More the merrier, i'd honestly be happiest seeing Kiaran and Owain as they came so close last time, and anything less than qualification from amy will have GB boxing with questions to answer, looks like that had to close comments on thier team selection post as the families of the British boxers were up in arms, as you say whitwell had more than enough opportunity to qualify, i dont think they can have any complaints personally.

The comments on Facebook and Twitter have certainly been....salty to say the least.

I knew Broadhurst had travelled with the squad to Colorado for the training camp, but I wasn't aware that she was due to compete there and hadn't been able to make the weight - assuming the comments online are correct.

Purely on past pedigree and the like, it is probably the right choice for a selector to make, especially given how important medals are to future funding. But obviously the optics etc are not good.

Builds up the issue until lost games when if medals are not reached they will be a lot of pressure on the current leadership to stand down.

Eh. I think that if medals are not reached that pressure would exist anyway. GBR have won at least 3 medals at each of the last 4 Games in Boxing. If they don't match that I'm sure the pressure will be intense.

No medals and funding will go completely.

I would very much doubt that. Cuts, sure. But I can't see a situation where Boxing goes from its current level of funding to zero.

Not a snowballs chance of that. Funding is forward looking, and a program that has consistently provided medals is not going to be starved for one poor showing - e.g. Se Rowing which had a dreadful time in tokyo, or Swimming in 2012. Funding was cut, a bit, but not a chance it would go completely or even close. At absolute worst there would be a review of the cycle - I mean, come on, have people forgotten when GB sent ONE BOXER to the Games?

Yup. We're talking about the 9th highest funded sport currently, our 4th most successful sport in Tokyo, and GBR's 6th most successful sport in terms of total medals won at all Olympics. It's just not remotely feasible that it would go from where it is down to nothing.

    • So, time for a recap! Hopefully there's still someone in this thread.   First of all, these Olympics were spectacular from the very beginning. Ever since the opening ceremony kicked things off, I felt something big was happening. Such a global event and a celebration of sports couldn't have been set in a better location this year. It's great to have the winter edition in Europe once again. Wonderful sceneries and great venues just fueled the atmosphere. I really enjoyed switching from one event to another, admiring the landscapes, just like every other Olympics.   The mascots were amazing. They're so adorable. I'm not really an avid collector of Olympic memorabilia, but I feel like I have to get my hands on one of these plushies. Not saying the last mascot was bad, but these stoats are perfect in every sense. The opening sequence rocks, the tune has been stuck in my head for days, it's really catchy. It gives off this dramatic vibe while still keeping a classy coating.   Interesting medal table this year! Norway showed up once again. Honestly, Klæbo, you're mad. I'm pretty sure the guy would place in the top ten of the leaderboard if he competed by himself, absolute legend. Both the United States and France recorded their best ever campaigns, very impressive. Some other countries locked in as well, unfortunately, some did not.   That brings me to a more subjective review.     What do we have here? It's not really pleasant to look at, but that's something we all expected. The last Summer Olympics were supposed to be successful, we had plenty of medal hopes before the start. That one was a disappointing campaign. This time, it wasn't that surprising.   Just as expected, not a lot to be cheerful about. However, I always try to pick something positive. Even these Olympics brought us some successful and memorable stories. There's definitely stuff to go through:   Alpine skiing: This is one of the memorable stories. Petra's comeback is already a victory on its own. It's even more symbolic when you realise the slopes of the Italian Alps marked her return to competitive skiing. Not a disappointing finish from her at all, she even improved her result in the second slalom run. Biathlon: Now this is the sport I'm closely following during the entire year. Well, to say it was disappointing is an understatement. No individual finish in the top twenty is a disaster. No matter how we look at it, it's a failure, especially after all the promising things we've heard during the last few races, building up to the main part of the season. I'm not saying I expected medals, but the results are horrific from every angle. Paula not being able to shoot with less than three misses just sums up the hopelessness of Slovak biathlon in Antholz this year. The women's relay also didn't live up to the expectations. Disappointing. Figure skating: Adam Hagara is the first male competitor to reach the final round since Nagano. Very impressive. Despite not improving afterwards, it's a great debut for him. His time will definitely come, it will be interesting to watch him skate in four years from now. Ice hockey: Now this is where it gets interesting. Again, there wasn't much to expect from us at the Olympics this year compared to the past, but I definitely did not expect hockey to be our best shot at a medal. And what a ride it was! No matter how easy our path to the semifinal was compared to other teams, we rightfully earned it down to the last detail. Damn, winning a group with Sweden and Finland at the best tournament in twelve years feels like a dream. Absolutely surreal. If only we could change the outcome of the last weekend, it was disappointing, although definitely not as painful as Vancouver was, @hckošice definitely remembers that one better than me. In all seriousness, I'm glad we didn't disappoint, fourth place is a pleasant shock, something no one in Slovakia or outside the country predicted to happen. I suppose we know how to move the puck, we don't suck as much as we used to. Ski jumping: This is what I'm looking forward to. I know pretty much nothing about this sport outside of the basics, but Hektor Kapustík looks so promising. He's already reached several milestones of Slovak ski jumping in the last couple of months. I'm very excited to see what the future brings, he's definitely got the potential. I can picture myself watching him being a serious medal contender in a few years, the kid has wings. Ski mountaineering: I don't know, this whole sport was very anti-climatic. Not sure if it's because of the events happening almost at the end, the execution being pretty disappointing, or our athletes being unlucky, that's a Slovak classic. Just as I thought, we could have had a serious medal contender in the women's event if it wasn't for snow getting in the way. Stuff happens.   Other sports didn't really stand out.   There should be a big warning sign coming out of these Olympics for Slovakia. The brightest of our hopes did not come from a working state-sponsored system of support. They had to rely on their families and self-sacrifice plenty of times. There's not much support for young talents, nepotism and corruption are prioritised instead. I know that's something happening not only in Slovakia. Many countries suffer because of this, but it's still not something to be proud of.   To end with something more positive, our hockey future is so bright and I'm really excited to watch these young guys improving as time goes by. We've had the youngest squad on average, many of those players are eligible for multiple Olympic tournaments, including the World Championships we're hosting in three years. If these players are already the core of the team in their early twenties, we can only imagine how much glory they can bring in a few years. Finally, it looks like Slovak hockey is not getting worse. Let's keep it that way.

    • It's somewhat surprising that figure skating isn't more popular here.
    • I'm not against team events or even mixed team events, but I think they need to be more than the sum of individual performances. So relays are fine (including team event in luge), team pursuit too, team event in skeleton is ok cause you have this different type of start though I would prefer the luge system (with a chip instead of this board you definitely can't touch in skeleton ?). Rest needs to be rethought at least. And rules need to be coherent between the sports regarding how many teams you can enter, why is it 4 duos in alpine combined event and only 1 in CC team sprint ? 2 would be my limit for dual events, even in sports where they usually don't enter more than one team in WC events.    Alpine skiing (10)   No changes.   Biathlon (11 -> 9)   - Mixed relay + Single mixed relay. Agree with De_Gambassi, different format from the gender relays, increased chances for weaker nations to compete even if we would have two teams for some countries. - Both pursuits. I've seen several people complain about how tired the athletes were by the end of the Games during the mass-starts. Thing is these are the same people that are adamant on keeping the pursuit in the program. Either ditch them or treat the sprint as a qualification round. You would then have one individual races, one MS and one "exciting" double-event.   Bobsleigh (4)   No changes. Max 2 teams per country.   Cross-country skiing (12 -> 11)   - Both team sprints. + Mixed team sprint.  Same idea as in biathlon. Like some I'm all for a real sprint and not the dull attrition races we witnessed in Val di Fiemme. Freestyle is mandatory, can be uphill/downhill but not longer than 1'30.  - 50km W + 30km W   Curling (3)     No changes.     Figure skating (5 -> 3)   - Team event.  Awful ranking system. - Ice dance.  "Dance", enough said.   Freestyle skiing (15)   - Team aerials. + Ski-cross mixed event. Ideally luge-like with immediate start after your teammate crossed the finish line. Alternate M-W order between the rounds. In snowboard cross men were almost useless all day long.   Ice hockey (2)   No changes.   Luge (6)   No changes.   Nordic combined (3 -> 4)   + Gundersen NH W - Gundersen NH M + Mass-start LH M - Team event + Mixed team event   Short-track speed skating (9)   No changes.   Skeleton (3)    No changes.   Ski jumping (6 -> 5)   - Super team M   Ski mountaineering (3)   - Both sprints + Both individuals   Snowboarding (11)   No changes.   Speed skating (14)   - Mass-start in the current format is shite + (Re)introduce an allround competition inspired by track cycling's omnium (first version). So a couple of individual races (500 and 3000 ?), an elimination race, a points races to end it.  (-) This would be endurance based so maybe ditch 3000/5000.
    • Worth noting that these Olympics, there were separate qualification and event threads where as in the past, they were merged together in one thread so that makes the increase in replies even more impressive.
    • The best part of last nights closing ceremony was the highlight montage Eurosport made.   Anyone who didn't see it NEEDS to see it. Amazing.   Probably my second favourite montage of an OG after the London one in 2012.
    • After our first ever Olympic medal, it's time for our first Paralympic medal.  The chances are good, but I'm traumatized by the Chinese after 2022.    I'm also concerned about the atmosphere of these games.
