After a strong start, picking up quotas across shotgun and rifle, the team's performances when it matter most seems to have gone off the boil a bit and we're now heading into the last chance shoot-out for quotas (pun intended)

Squad selection for ISSF Final Olympic Qualification Championship - Shotgun: 19-Apr - 29-Apr, Doha

2 quota places are available in each of the events.

Men's Skeet:

Ben Llewellin

Mitchell Brooker-Smith

Arran Eccleston

Men's Trap:

Matt Coward-Holley

Aaron Heading

Ewen Ross

Women's Skeet:

Emily Hibbs

Alexandra Hayman Joyce

Jessica Burgess

Women's Trap:

Abbey Ling

Kirsty Hegarty

Maddie Purser

Have to admit to being a bit confused by this one - the Final Olympic Qualification event is taking place BEFORE the European Shotgun Championships. That could work in GB's favour but it seems a very messy way of managing the process.

Squad selection for ISSF Final Olympic Qualification Championship - Rifle & Pistol: 11-Apr - 20-Apr, Rio

Men's 10m Air Rifle:

Dean Bale

Mike Bamsey

Tom Diggle

Men's 10m Air Pistol:

James Miller

Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions:

Dean Bale

Mike Bargeron

Men's Rapid Fire Pistol:

Sam Gowin

Women's 10m Air Rifle:

Ruth Mwandumba

Women's 10m Air Pistol:

No Brits entered

Women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions:

Katie Gleeson

Women's 25m Pistol:

Jess Liddon

Although I am not expecting us to be bagging any quotas here, it will be interesting to see how Mwandumba gets on - she fronted the campaign as the new face of British shooting last year but then didn't really make an impact on the team selection.

Worth pointing out that there are also mixed team events in Rio as well - which GB have entered - but which would seem to be pretty pointless as there are no quotas directly awarded for the team events.

  • 2 months later...

Sinead McIntosh took gold in women's 50m 3 positions rifle at the ISSF World Cup in Baku this weekend. She also won the event at the first World Cup in Cairo and 4th in the second event in Baku. She's showing the kind of form that she had back in 2019. Is it too much to think she could be heading for a podium in Paris?

It certainly wouldn't be a shock but shooting is a sport that - at least from my experience - has always been relatively unpredictable and prone to somewhat unexpected performances 'on the day'.

European Shotgun Championships got underway today with the 1st phase of qualifying for the men's and women's trap events. This is the last chance saloon for our shotgun squad to book their spots in Paris.

Women's Trap

Lucy Hall: 70/75 (23/23/24) Currently sitting in 5th place. Has already secured quota for Olympics.

Abbey Ling: 65/75 (22/23/20) Currently sitting in 29th place.

Madeleine Purser: 62/75 (23/19/20) Currently sitting in 39th place.

Long story short, :GBR won't be getting a second quota in Women's Trap.

Men's Trap:

Nathan Hales: 73/75 (25/23/25) Currently in 4-7th place but has already secured his ticket to Paris.

Aaron Heading: 72/75 (24/25/23) Currently in 8-12th place. Needs 2 strong rounds tomorrow to get into the final where he would be in the running for Olympic quota.

Matthew Coward-Holley: 70/75 (23/25/22) Currently in 18-37th place. This kind of sums up Coward-Holley's performance all season - he's just been too inconsistent when it really matters.

If Heading doesn't get the quota here, Coward-Holley could/should be in strong position to get quota through the ranking pathway.

Looking ahead to LA '28, worth saying that our Juniors are doing pretty well so far Hollie Lumsden is 4th and Leah Southall is 11th in women's junior trap and Thomas Betts is 3rd in the men's junior event.

The big one is the Men's Skeet. Need an italian or Ben Llewllin to win for Llewellin to qualify, and set up a mixed team skeet shot.

:hairpull: Lucy Hall frustratingly inconsistent again. She led competition after 100 targets only to get a 21 in the final round and now faces shoot off to get into the final. Thank goodness she already has her ticket to Paris.

A French quota also qualifies Llewellin if he fails at Euros. Don't think he will though, performed really well at Baku last week.

However he does have a nasty tendency of under performing when it really matters though - I don't think he's really been close to securing a quota in the qualifying events to date.
