Henry_Leon 1,397 Posted March 18 Author #311 Share Posted March 18 (edited) Giro d’Italia Tour of Italy (Not the cycling race) In this space we present some cities inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List MATERA Matera, a city in Basilicata known worldwide for its historic “Sassi”, two districts (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), well-known for their ancient cave dwellings inhabited since the Paleolithic period. Listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1993, along with the park of the Rupestrian Churches. The term "sasso" derives from Latin saxum, meaning rock or great stone. The "Sassi" of Matera are an urban settlement deriving from the various forms of civilization that have occurred over time. The streets in some parts of the Sassi often run on top of other houses. The ancient town grew up on one slope of the ravine created by the Gravina river. In the 1950s, the government of Italy forcefully relocated most of the population of the Sassi to areas of the developing modern city. Beset by extreme poverty and riddled with malaria, the unhealthy living conditions were considered inhuman, however, people continued to live in the Sassi. Until the late 1980s this was considered an area of poverty, since many of these houses were uninhabitable. The recovery action that began in the mid-1980s has a historical value however also has become more tourism-oriented, and it has promoted the regeneration of the Sassi with the aid of many stake-holders. The rock churches in the territory of Matera and along the ravines of the Murgia Materana park there are around 150 small churches carved into the rock, founded mainly in the Early Middle Ages, they are buildings carved into the rock. Initially born as religious structures, over time they have undergone various transformations of use, becoming homes or shelters for animals. They are an important testimony to the presence of communities of Benedictine, Lombard and Byzantine monks. Henry_Leon 1,397 Posted March 20 Author #313 Share Posted March 20 (edited) Giro d’Italia Tour of Italy (Not the cycling race) In this space we present some cities inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List ALBEROBELLO Alberobello is a small town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Bari (Apulia), famous for its unique trulli buildings. The trulli of Alberobello have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. Trullo is a house whose internal space is covered by a dry stone corbelled or keystone vault. The trullo is essentially a rural building type, with its thick walls and its inability to form multi-storey structures, it is an inefficient use of ground space and consequently ill-suited for high density settlement. Being constructed of small stones, however, it has a flexibility and adaptability of form making the design most helpful in tight urban situations. Today, the trulli are popular for tourists and are often bought and restored for general use. Anyone wishing to restore a trullo, however, needs to conform with many regulations, as trulli are protected under the UNESCO world heritage law. Henry_Leon 1,397 Posted March 22 Author #316 Share Posted March 22 (edited) Giro d’Italia Tour of Italy (Not the cycling race) In this space we present some cities inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List GENOVA Genoa, situated in the in the Ligurian Sea,, was the capital of one of the most powerful maritime republics for over seven centuries, from the 11th century to 1797. Particularly from the 12th century to the 15th century, the city played a leading role in the commercial trade in Europe. The historical centre, also known as old town, of Genoa is one of the largest and most-densely populated in Europe. Part of it was also inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006 as Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. The Strade Nuove (Italian for "New Streets") are a group of streets built by the Genoese aristocracy during the expansion of the city at a time when the Republic of Genoa was at the height of its financial and seafaring power. These are Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, Via Balbi, Via Cairoli. The Palazzi dei Rolli (Italian for "Palaces of the Lists") are a group of palaces, most of which also date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, which were associated to a particular system of ‘public lodging’ in private residences, whereby notable guests on State visit to the Republic were hosted in one of these palaces on behalf of the State. The "Rolli" or "Lists" preserved to this day were five: 1576 (including 52 palaces); 1588 (111); 1599 (150); 1614 (96); and 1664 (95). In total, there were 162 palaces included at least once in one of these official lists. Are the forty-two palaces currently included by UNESCO in the World Heritage Site. The cost of building the new theatre was borne by the owners of the boxes at the Ducal, in exchange for possession of the land on which stood the church of Santa Maria alla Scala (hence the name) and for renewed ownership of their boxes. Designed by neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini, La Scala opened on 3 August 1778 with Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres globally. The theater complex is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet, La Scala Theatre Orchestra, and the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra and is located in the square of the same name, next to the Casino Ricordi, home to the Scala Theater Museum. The original structure was renovated in 1907 when it was given its current layout. In 1943, during World War II, La Scala was severely damaged by bombing. It was rebuilt and reopened on 11 May 1946. The theatre underwent a major renovation from early 2002 to late 2004. The Milan City Council approved the project by the architect Mario Botta for the restoration. The opera house re-opened on 7 December 2004 with a production, conducted by Riccardo Muti, of Salieri's Europa riconosciuta, the the same opera performed at La Scala's inauguration in 1778 Edited March 25 by Henry_Leon Wumo, SteveParker, mrv86 and 3 others 4
