Which makes 18/18 for France and Russia.Russia will have a full squad without a doubt. We may join them, but it'll be close. Before the last GP, Anstett is the last Top 14 qualifier, and Rousset the last european one. :fingers:

I really hope that GB will win a gold medal in mens foil in Rio. We will have a small team (as expected), but at least we wont have any tourists. :d

I expect 1 medal and i would be very happy with 2 medals. I am sure that we will have at least one team in Tokyo (our mens sabre team should qualify), but this could also be the only positive thing to say about our future in fencing. Joppich, Heidemann and Golubytskyi all will retire before Tokyo, so we have to hope that talents like Ebert or Stahlberg will take their place. I expect a lot from France and USA in Rio, i think those nations will each win 2-3 gold medals.

  • 2 weeks later...

After losing few times in quarterfinals (mostly 15-14) Abedini finally made it to the semifinal (and later to the final) in a Grand Prix (or World Cup) event and with this he made history to win Iran's first ever medal in this level of competition.

he also qualified himself and his teammate Pakdaman for Rio :d

I really dont know whats going on with Ebert ... just the fact that she still competes in this age category shows that she isnt very confident. By now she should dominate at this level, but it looks as if she at the moment isnt better than 2 or 3 years ago. I hope she will recover soon!

On the other hand very good for Eifler finally, she always was a big talent but never was able to show it at the big stage.

Todays semifinals:

Mens foil (starting at 19:45 CET live on Youtube):

:RUS Borodachev vs. :ITA Marini

:USA Tourette vs. :GER Klein

Womens epee (starting at 19:00 CET live on Youtube):

:ITA Bozza vs. :HUN Petri

:ITA Cagnin vs. :USA Stewart

Some observations:

Russia, France and the big asian nations seem to be weaker than in the past. Italy and USA are still very strong. Singapore is extremely strong so far and in my opinion the biggest surprise. Poland seems to have a pretty good depth, but they are a bit unlucky so far.

From a german perspective:

We really improved on cadet level, i never thought that we could win 2 individual medals "without" Ebert.

Especially in womens sabre (where we finally seem to have a good talent) and mens foil (where we had the number 1 seed and one other athlete in the semifinal) the results are very positive for us.

Its still annoying that there are no team events on cadet level, this year we couldve won medals in womens sabre and mens epee.

    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
    • badminton queen Carolina Marin announced that she can't take part into the home Europeans in the upcoming weeks because of her injured knee and calls it a career 😭
    • yes, there are (or there was, at least) don't forget that the women's 800m had world and olympic champions like Semenya, Jelimo and Nyonsaba...basically, it was 10 years of DSD winners only the same Athing Mu was suspected to be DSD (never confirmed, but somehow she totally disappeared after Tokyo) then, there were the 2 girls from Namibia (1 won a medal over 200m in Tokyo) in Italy we have the living scandal Valentina Petrillo (a paralympian!!!), who's actually a real man not to mention the weightlifter from who took part into the Tokyo Games so, it's a real problem all around the globe, not just a US crusade against a few woke idiots
