Do you think we will see the World Championships outside of Europe in the next 15 years?

Pyeongchang world championships were not exactly advertisement for that

Although of course South Korea isn't the best non-European choice.

I also wonder if there is a thought process in the IBU that goes like this.

We will try a venue with the IBU Junior/Youth Cups ... if successful, we will "promote" you to consideration for IBU Cup/ events... if successful, promotion to WC events.  If successful. World Championships.

Watch me try and bring this thread back to biathlon.

The last Biathlon World Championships was back in 1994 at Canmore.  Lake Placid had it back in 1987 and 1973.  Do you think we will see the World Championships outside of Europe in the next 15 years?  I know that in 2023 Lake Placid is hosting the World University Games, a step back into the limelight for them?  They are putting a decent amount of money into the biathlon venue there.

That would make 4 potential venues in the US and 2 in Canada.

Also as an aside, I sat in on a USBA zoom meeting (with permission) they are moving to a more regional concept with Biathlon Canada, and the Nordic Tour.  They want the biathletes to race in Nordic races as well as biathlon ones.  The races will be more localized to increase participation instead of trying to do a race series over the entire continent.

Yep, looking forward on being 1 of the 5 (10 max) people there :p

Also, here is the venue list as of early this year of places that have either a Class A or Class B license.

I still can't get over how easy they publish lists of class A and B licenses and so on, but how completely secret they are about the incredibly, totally important IBU Qualifying Points List that's nowhere to be found

It was not easy, I had to ask and wait on this for about 4 months.  But I see your point.

Yes, the IBU has been very helpful.  I only had to send one e-mail and got a great response.  Subsequent e-mails have helped been quickly answered.  Right now I am actually working on a relatively short term paper on Swiss Biathlon (more there than you might think) and a longer term one on the USBA.  Lots of really interesting things there.  The Swiss biathlon paper should be published in November.

Cool. I love when federations take an active interest in people’s work. I’ve found quite a few to be rather helpful, but some are just awful (here’s looking at you OCA, PGC, and Atos ). I’m glad that they’ve been supportive though because your research sounds interesting. Hopefully my contribution helped in some way :d

It has, that one is for the larger/longer one.  I appreciate it.  COVID19 has helped and hurt.  I can not travel anywhere nor can I get anything from other libraries, but is has allowed me to work on what I do have, and can access.  So good and bad.

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
