  • 1 month later...

Men’s and women’s ice hockey teams have qualified for Milano-Cortina 2026 already!

Men’s ice hockey team qualified by virtue of their position in the IIHF World Ranking, following the conclusion of the 2023 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships.

Women’s ice hockey team qualified by virtue of mathematically being guaranteed a quota through the IIHF World Rankings, following the 2024 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships, as they can’t fall behind Japan.

Also, if you didn’t see @Topicmaster1010 ’s reply on the Ice Hockey 2023-24 Discussion Thread, NHL players are back

Did some early medal projections to see how things look one year out... based on current form I figure we'll win ~22 medals.

That would be noticeably down from 26 in Beijing.

It's kinda scary cause a lot of programs seem to deteriorating. The afterglow from all the 2010 funding has fully worked it way through and now we've left with a lot of empty cupboards.

How many of them are likely golds though?

I'd say 8 are favourites.

Could make a case for more. Could make a case for less. We're very strong in short track, especially the men, but that sport is a crap shoot at the best of times. Hockey and Curling could produce a bunch, but we haven't exactly been covering ourselves in glory there the last couple Olympics

    • Yep. Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country
