This one was however some ways north compared to the main shock and previous aftershocks.

Yes, which is pretty worrying. Hopefully that was the last major one of this whole 'system' of shocks.

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Considering the amount of damage and big buildings that are still on the brink of collapse, I find it hard to imagine the death toll will stay inside single digits..

lot of stuff like photos of damage is coming from Durrës, a city with nearly 300.000 inhabitants which was around 15km from the center of the quake. Capital Tirana with nearly 900.000 people was only around 30km away from it.

That’s the major problem for Albania. The rest of Europe modernized and left them pretty far behind. I was reading the other day that not even all their major roads are paved (which is just crazy for a European country). Plus, I don’t think they’ve built/improved much of the infrastructure since WW2. Communist block buildings also weren’t really built to last during earthquakes, so it was only a matter of time I’m afraid.

Well, in my area there is no earthquake, but I think they would last it - even drilling a hole in a wall is kind of a big challenge in the communist-type buildings.

That might bite you in the ass actually. In an earthquake scenario, you want buildings that move with the ground. That’s why American and Japanese buildings sway so much during earthquakes. We’ve built our buildings to sway with the earthquakes to prevent collapses and mitigate damage. I’m not sure if the exact science behind it, but it definitely works.

No, in Mali. A French helicopter, but in Mali. Apparently two helicopters crashed while they were fighting Islamic terrorists/jihadists there.
