They can do whatever they want, it's their event 

 

It's happened before. Toronto 2015 was a shit show in terms of athletics entries and so many people were cut last minute (across all countries)

It's bizarre. In Tokyo so many sports went over their quota including athletics. I guess they are desperate to stay at 10500

Optics. They can say we were at 10500 athletes and were sustainable etc. Bs really

There is a deeper meaning to it for sure . They wouldn’t do it for that reason

Always wondered about how exactly WA applied the rules for relays and alternates. The rule book reads like you can only have six (five plus an alternate, or four and two alternates for the mixed 4x400)... but we named seven, and don't seem to be the only ones

Sounds llike Athletics gets a total of 1,810 athletes, and has been having issues planning around it. 

Read one article, and it sounds like there are work arounds. Rather than "alternatives" they'll be considered "replacement athletes" and can still stay in the village but may not have full accreditation.
