In general, I don't know if I like this so much...I wish all medal ceremonies would be sort of formal. Not formal like without smiling of course, but formal in the sense that it's clear this is the big stage, not some funky hip-hop local street competition.

Completely agree, it's like they want to create some X Games atmosphere or whatnot. And just this segregation of sports into "traditional", "popular" and "cool" sports is a complete crap in my opinion.

But this various popular music for various events is just another thing that organizers have done to make this Olympics less traditional... Among other things, they have put ceremonies outside of athletics stadium (and I assume that means there will be no Olympic flame in athletics stadium, very sad...), they had to put blue track for athletics and so on..

I don't care about blue track to be honest...what I find the most important things when it comes to formalities are these:

- Medal ceremonies right after the event, so the emotion is still there, the athletes are still tired instead of a day later when the emotion has passed

- The same music for all ceremonies, so you really get this "Olympic feeling" with every ceremony

- Medal ceremonies at the venue where the medals were won

The clothes that the medal presenters are wearing...I couldn't care less :p

Australian athletes arrived at the Olympic Village and have moved back out to hotels, because conditions are "unliveable"...toilets barely flush, showers flood the rooms and so on. Wonderful start..

Slovak athletes will live in one of the Olympic Village building with the Czechs. just read it, absolutely lovely news :d

Awesome. I was living in the Netherlands during Sochi and one of my finest memories of the games is being invited to watch the Slovakia vs Czech Rep game with people from both countries (a Canadian guy and myself were the only neutrals). I was expecting a lot of vitriol and instead it was extremely friendly. Velvet divorce indeed.

ah cool, :) well you hardly can find something much more important in this world than SVK - CZE hockey match is :d

yeah divorce...well,  except hockey matches we still feel that we are like the same nation,:d  no. it´s hard to explain, but big majority of peoples there and here still regard us like two brothers, which few retarded politicians tried to convince that they can´t be together. the problem is that this bunch of corrupted bastards managed to split us without asking anyone if we agree, no referendum, nothing, just hey peoples give us few minutes of your attention! since next year we will be 2 independant countries. yipee !  ....

    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
