Equestrian FEI Dressage Group F Olympic Games Qualifier 2019

Recommended Posts

Entry list...

:RSA South Africa

Laurienne Dittmann (Don Weltino K)

Gretha Ferreira (Lertevangs Lavinia)

Tanya Seymour (Ramoneur)

Nicole Smith (Chi La Rou)

So... This will be interesting. :p As long as they finish the competition, South Africans will be given a quota. :d There are many more riders actually entered, but nobody else from Group F except two Palestinians (Diana Al-Shaer and Christian Zimmermann), who obviously can't form a team.

Nevertheless, provided they finish the competition and obtain requirements, South Africans are on path to become the first ever African Olympic dressage team. And that is really cool, especially given that in 2016 they missed out on a team qualification by a ridiculously small margin of 0.06%!

Team competition is apparently scheduled for Friday, starting at 18:15 local time

Is anyone else competing outside of Group F or will we see four South Africans performing one after the other?

Presumably they will be mixed in-between various individual riders from other nations.

Overall, entry list includes GP riders from :BEL:CHI:FIN:GEO:GER:GRE:HKG:IRI:JPN:KOR:NED:NOR:PLE:RUS:SGP:RSA:SWE:VEN. Group F nations of Iran and Palestine have individuals only.

I know almost nothing about Equestrian :d (well obviously more than nothing but still nothing comparing to you.) is there any chance for Miss Sohi ?!

I just read an interview with Iran Eqestrian Federation president and he was very positive about it. but I learned to not trust them. I can see the current World Ranking where she is not in a good position though.

Well, Sohi recently took over the ride on former British team horse Don Carissimo. She scored 61.6% on debut in early October, and then just a little higher last weekend. Of course, nobody expects her to get 72-74% scores that Gareth Hughes was getting on that horse. And she doesn't need that for Tokyo anyway - 66% or more would be enough to challenge Morocco and Palestine for the individual quota places.

However, Tokyo will probably come too soon for them. Qualification period ends on December 31st, and that leaves them very little time for improvement. I watched them compete on their debut. Potential is there, but there were oh-so-many cheap rhythm mistakes, which can be only rectified with more training = more time. Participation at 2022 WEG is more realistic.

Event starts in about an hour.

Results can be seen here

So it's all today and the most important thing is three athletes from :RSA finishing, right?

Pretty much.

I think they have three athletes that have met the minimum requirements, though I'll have to double check.

    • Though I did just see that today's race isn't valid for FIS points.
    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
