It would only be the 4th time or so when he seems to be done for a year or two and then comes back again

Sandro Pertile is his 'assistant' this year (I think they're both TD now, but one has to be called assistant, so there you go), and takes over when Hofer retires after the season-closing ski flying world championships in Planica.
