Winter Olympic Games 2026 Bid Process

Recommended Posts

  • 1 year later...

after being chosen as host of the 2019 IOC Session, Milan is thinking (maybe...you know, in Italy talking about something without knowing the issue and without having real perspective of what it means, it's absolutely normal) about the 2026 Winter Games, with the city hosting ceremonies and ice events and Valtellina (+ the St. Moritz track) hosting the snow and sliding events (don't trust those who already started talking of multi-location Olympics...they just dream of stealing some money with that excuse, but this should be excluded since the beginning)...

who knows? I always thought that such a choice would have been better than Turin also in the past...

probably I'd support such a candidature...

The IOC would have to change its rules to allow Milan (or any other italian city) to bid.

What's the distance between Milan and the ski resorts (and ST Moritz) ?

why they should change the rules? now they have already stated that a candidate city can use some infrastructure located in another Country (they did it just to allow Stockholm and/or Helsinki to bid...the Fins didn't even try, but Stockholm was stopped only by a local poll...they already had an agreement with the IOC for 2026)...

in any case, it's too early to say what's gonna happen with Milan (there's not a real project yet...it's just me thinking about St. Moritz as the less expensive idea for the sliding events...maybe they could even decide to build a new track inside our Borders)...it was just an interview with our Mayor that yesterday said that this would be an opportunity that deserves to be evaluated very carefully, because the Winter Games could be sustainable (meanwhile the Summer Games are too big to be hoseted in a relatively small town as Milan -even if the whole Metropolitan area is not that small)...

by the way, the distance between Milan and Bormio (Valtellina's main resort) is 200km, meanwhile St. Moritz is 330km far away from here...

the problem, however, at the moment are different...there are no large streets to go there from Milan...traffic is always a nightmare...if you're lucky, it takes at least 3/3and a half hours to cover the distance (not to mention St. Moritz, which is almost a half day trip to reach from Milan)...

why they should change the rules?

The country hosting the IOC cession can't bid for hosting the olympics chosen during this same cession.

edit: well, Milan doesn't seem as a vey appealing winter games host city anyway.

edit2: I see that we don't even have a dedicated thread for the 2026 race. Anyone up for that ?

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "2026 winter olympic games"

By July 2019 and the 134th IOC session (Milano), we will know where the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be hold.

The bidding process is yet to be officially started, but two cities are for now considered as the front runners. Two cities with a very Agenda 2020 feeling (even more so Sion who proposes venues from Lausanne to St Moritz).

. Sion (SUI)

http://sion2026.ch/ (fr/de)

.Innsbruck (AUT)

http://www.olympia2026.at/ (de)

.Other Potential bidding cities : Lillehammer, Calgary, Salt Lake, Almaty, Gratz, etc.

What are your thoughts ? Is agenda going to save the Winter OG ?

EDIT: Innsbruck is dead after public vote

Speaking of Agenda 2020... Sion 2026 is even proposing to hold the speed skating events outside of the country, in Germany... or even in The Netherlands (in french) :yikes:.

The speed skating arena beeing the only venue Sion 2026 is missing. Could we see the first bidding candidate with zero venue needed to be buit ?

That hardly makes sense. Lausanne will host speed skating competitions during 2020 WYOG.

Apparently, it'll only be a temporary venue. Which is also an option that Sion 2026 is looking at, alongside a foreign rink and an outdoor venue.

They will defintly not built a permanent speed skating rink in any case at least.

It's a trend the sliding sports and speed skating should be nervous of btw. If future WOG host cities are not even going to built new sliding or speed skating tracks, then what's left for the future of their sports (and for any possible expansion) ?

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
