Then it's even stranger that some countries didn't send their best teams.

But thanks for the explanation.

Why would any nation send their best team when this team will easily earn a quota for said nation via ranking?

Brazil for instance will get 2 pairs each gender in the rankings, so we sent a team that I think is not even eligible for Olympic participation (Angela/Carol), just to participate I guess?

Just noticed it now, but what's up with this incredibly unfair thing of having a group of four pairs, but each team only playing against two other teams instead of all three other teams? :dunno:

Winners of first matches plays for first place, losers for third. Strange system, I admit.

That's fine for some not so important 1-star tournament, but an OQT..? That's just unfair..

The same is in World Tour, even 5-star tournaments, I'm afraid. I learned that yesterday...

yeah, it's the regular format for world beach volleyball...the pairs are seeded according to their world ranking and the best faces the worst (and of course the 2 in between face each other) in the group's semifinals, then the winners are already through to the next ranking (but play for the group win and to have a better seeding in the knockout stage) and the losers play for the 3rd and last qualifying position in the group...

now here we have an abnormal situation because only 2 pairs advance to the semis, but in any other tournament all pairs still get 2 chances to go through (but of course you can be safe already at the firstr try, if you win the first match), so it's not so unfair...

the idea is to save some time (less matches in the schedule of the tournament without cutting the number of participants) and also to have all pairs playing 1 less match than what would need with a round robin preliminary stage, so to have the top pairs less tired and in better shape for the final phases of the tournament...

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
