Boxing at the Pan American Games 2023

Recommended Posts

Men's predictions part 2.

M51kg

Gold- Roscoe Hill :USA, Silver- Ramon Nicanor Quiroga :ARG , Bronze- Oscar Castaneda :MEX, Jabali Breedy :BAR.

Other Olympic calibre boxers- Yuberjen Martinez :COL, Luis Delgado :ECU.

The top bracket of this draw is very let's say open. Justin Parina :CAN fights Central American silver medallist Junior Alcantara :DOM and the winner will face the unproven Oscar Castaneda. I'll take the unproven boxer against this calibre of opposition. The second bracket is pretty loaded though, 2021 world silver medallist Roscoe Hill meets Alejandro Claro Fiz :CUB in the last 16. Claro Fiz doesn't have a whole lot going for him other than that he is Cuban and won their selection trials though. The winner will meet Central American champion and Rio silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez. Assuming we get Hill vs Martinez I am not sure which way this one will go although whoever wins will very likely go on to win gold here.

The third bracket is fascinatingly even, Michael Trindade :BRA likely meets the winner of 2023 panam champ Keymberth Gonzalez :VEN vs Jabali Breedy. Breedy is the most established but I honestly don't know. South American champion Luis Delgado got about as good a draw as he could have hoped for with a quarter final against the established Ramon Nicanor Quiroga and one of the above boxers in the semis standing between him and an Olympic spot. I'm going to pick the strandja silver medallist Quiroga though because his 2023 form is better.

M71kg

Gold- Marco Verde :MEX, Silver- Wanderson de Oliveira :BRA, Bronze- Jhonathan Arboleda :COL, Christiann Palacio :VEN.

Other Olympic calibre boxers- Omari Jones :USA.

This draw is a bit lopsided as well. At the top Jhonathan Arboleda :COL should medal having to come through only Jhonny Fernandez :DOM and Eduardo Beckford :PAN who he beat in the semi finals of the Central American champs earlier this year. The secodn bracket here is stacked with 2022 panam champ and 2023 Central American champion Marco Verde taking on world quarter finallist Jorge Cuellar :CUB and 2021 world silver medallist Omari Jones  taking on promisng youngster Angel Llanos :PUR. Verde beat Jones last year and we may well see them matchup again here. Christiann Palacio is very likely to make the semis here having gotten a very straightforward draw up until that point. World bronze medallist Wanderson de Oliveira's toughest fight before the final may well be his first one against 2022 panam silver medallist Jose Rodriguez :ECU.

M80kg

Gold- Arlen Lopez :CUB, Silver- Wanderley Pereira :BRA, Bronze- Keven Beasejour :CAN, Cedrick Belony-Duliepre :HAI.

Other Olympic calibre boxers- Robby Gonzalez :USA, Christian Pinales :DOM.

There could have been a really interesting question here of weighing two time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez' recent patchy form against his experience and nous for showing up when it really counts but the draw he got was very straightforward so the risk of him not qualifying is quite low. His quarter final against Central American silver medallist Jhojan Caicedo :COL should at least be somewhat interesting. The draw has opened up for  2023 panam champ Keven Beasejour to win a medal here with only a couple of experienced pros in Julio Alamos :CHI and Abraham Buonnarigo :ARG or Desmond Amsterdam :GUY in his way.

On the other side of the draw 2021 world champion Robby Gonzalez got about as tough a draw as posible here meeting Central American champ (including beating Arlen Lopez) Christian Pinales before a prospective quarter final against world middleweight silver medallist Wanderley Pereira in a quarter final. The final bracket of this draw has absolutely nobody. I have no idea who of Eliezer Brito :PUR, Charles Cox :BAR, Cedrick Belony-Duliepre :HAI and Jaden Ecclestone :JAM will medal but one of them has to. Cedrick Belony-Duliepre appears to be Canadian or at least based there so I guess I'll pick him. Very little chance any of them even last the full three rounds in the semis though. Despite having the 2021 world and Olympic champions, this really isn't a very strong field.

M92kg

Gold- Julio Cesar La Cruz :CUB,Silver- Keno Machado :BRA, Bronze- Julio Castillo :ECU, Bryan Colwell :CAN.

Other Olympic calibre boxers- Jamar Talley :USA.

Julio Cesar La Cruz is not the dominant force he was for so long and he does have a couple of losses this year but he does start as the favourite here. He has got a tough draw meeting 2022 panam champ Jamar Talley in the last 16. The young American is talented but is unlikely to trouble La Cruz. After a quarter final against Andrews Salgado :CHI, La Cruz will then likely matchup against only man who can match his experience in Julio Castillo. Although, Castillo does have to beat 2023 panam champ Rogelio Romero :MEX first. A potential Castillo vs La Cruz fight would be a battle where the winner would make it to their fourth Olympics. Then again La Cruz has 2 gold medals from those appearances and Castillo hasn't even won a fight. Both should ultimately make it though. Brazil got some good draws especially in the heavier weights and this one is no exception with only a quarter final against either Central American silver medallist Marlon Hurtado :COL or bronze medallist from the same event Daniel Guzman :DOMboth of which Keno Machado has beaten before realistically standing in his way. Canada didn't get any great draws from an Olympic perspective but do have the opportunity to pick up a couple of cheap medals with a likely quarter final between Bryan Colwell and Emmanuel Pompey :GUY deciding the last medal here.

Gold  Silver  Bronze  Total  Olympic Qs
Brazil :BRA 3 5 2 9 8
Cuba :CUB 3 1 0 4 4
Colombia :COL 2 2 3 7 5
USA :USA 2 1 5 8 4
Canada :CAN 1 1 3 5 2
Puerto Rico :PUR 1 0 2 4 1
Mexico :MEX 1 0 1 2 1
Dominican Republic :DOM 0 1 1 2 1
Argentina :ARG 0 1 0 1 1
Panama :PAN 0 1 0 1 1
Venezuela :VEN 0 0 4 4 1
Ecuador :ECU 0 0 3 3 1
Barbados :BAR 0 0 1 1 0
Haiti :HAI 0 0 1 1 0

This would be a tremendous result for Brazil. It's strange to not see Cuba at the top of the medal table but honestly this about as good a result as possible for them here. Flip side of things for the US where this would be a very poor result but they are much more likely to outperform this than underperform further. They did definetely get a bit unlucky draw wise certainly compared to Brazil and Colombia. Other than that 5 medals would be a very good outcome for Canada although only an average one from an Olympic qualifying perspective and Ecuador and Venezuela would probably both be left quite disappointed if it plays out like this. (Although Venezuela have already lost a projected medal at 57kg).

The results system has the individual scores down here for this boxing bout but hasn’t indicated who won 😂

2-2

Click over to the "reports" tab, it's more clear there. Also, if you view on the schedule page, the winner is shaded light blue.

Sure, I found the result. I was just highlighting how poor the results system is.

Yeah, Bornan seems to have lost a step this year. They need to improve data reliability and PDF formatting. This could be a great results system with some tweaks.

their Asian Games results website was more than OK to me...if only they didn't take it down just 2 days after the end of the Games

That was a nice system, but there was a lot of weird stuff about it.

    • 2028 Team Size Projection – Feb 2026 Update   Here’s an update to my 2028 Team Size Projection. Only February events were considered for this update. Sorry for the late update, I was quite busy in my personal life. While I touch upon major events changes may occur due to results in smaller events. Additionally, several sports released their qualification document so there may be cases where I have to update the projection. I will only include sports where there is an update.   Here is the link to the updated sheet.   Aquatics (Artistic Swimming, Diving, Water Polo) World Cup events were held for artistic swimming and diving. is now projected to qualify in artistic swimming over .   Diving saw some changes with gains going to (4) (2) and losses going to (2) .   Water polo had the European Championships. No changes to Olympic projections.   Athletics (Marathon & Race Walking) The Tokyo Marathon and a gold level race walking tour event in Taicang were held. In the men’s marathon and are now in a qualifying position at the expense of and . On the women’s side; (2) have moved into a qualifying position while are out.   In the men’s 20km walk, gained two quotas at the expense of and . For the women’s 20km walk it is who are in position while are out.   Badminton The African and Oceania championships took place along with other minor tournaments. The only change relative to last month was in the men’s doubles where overtook for the final spot   Baseball/Softball The qualification document was released. While a slight change occurred, no changes to the teams qualified were made.   Basketball A set of men’s World Cup qualifiers were held this month. Angola’s loss to Mali is something to consider, but given how close it was I still consider Angola to still be the favourite to qualify. On the other hand, Argentina’s loss to Uruguay is enough to consider a change. After some shuffling around is now on the inside while is out.   Cycling (BMX Racing, Road & Track) Major events held this month include various continental championships.   In BMX Racing, gained a quota over in the men’s while is in a qualifying position over for the women.   In road cycling, on the men’s side; gained one quota over respectively. On the women’s side; gained one quota over   Track cycling see changes in the men’s individual sprint/keirin ( gain over ), men’s Madison ( gain over ), men’s omnium ( and gain over and ), women’s team sprint ( gain over ) and women’s individual sprint/keirin ( x2 over and ).   Equestrian (Dressage & Jumping) Several World Cup events were held this month. While in Jumping the team quota saw gains for :MEX :ESP over :COL :POR inversely, Colombia and Portugal will gain an individual quota, replacing the vacated Mexico and Spain. Additionally there are gains for :POL over :GRE   Fencing (Foil) The Turin Grand Prix was held this month among other events. No changes in any of the foil events.   Field Hockey The Pro League continues. No changes in terms of Olympic projection.   Golf The Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational were the main events held on the men’s side. However, no changes in terms of Olympic projection.   Judo The Paris and Tashkent Grand Slam were major events held.   The following nations gained a men’s quota: :CYP :EGY :GBR :SUI :TJK :TUN The following nations lost a men’s quota: :COD :ITA :POL :QAT :TUR :ZAM The following nations gained a women’s quota: :BRA :CHA :COD :EGY :GER :POL :KSA The following nations lost a women’s quota: :GBR :NED :RUS :ESP :TJK :TUN :TUR   Lacrosse The qualification document was released. No changes to the teams qualified were made.   Rugby Sevens The World Series event in Perth, Australia and the second tier event in Nairobi, Kenya were held this month. No changes on the men’s side while on the women’s side there was some shuffling, but ultimately no one fell off. Argentina did make a case by winning the SVNS 2 tournament while Brazil finished 6th which included a 28-17 win for Argentina. While a good start, I don’t think it’s quite enough to make the swab just yet.   Shooting The Asian Rifle/Pistol Championships were held this month. No updates to the qualification projection.   Sport Climbing The Oceania Speed World Championships were held this month. No updates to the projection.   Squash The Windy City Open among other events were held this month. On the men’s side :GER is now in a qualification position over :QAT . On the women’s side; :INA :PUR :ESP are in and :CRC :FRA :FRA are out.   Table Tennis The qualification document was released along with the Singapore Smash. Relative to my estimations a few changes occurred. Quota changes include :AUT :CAN :SVK :SVK losing men’s quotas. They are replaced by :ALG :CZE :ITA :MDA. On the women’s side, :ARG :CUB :CZE :GUA :GUA :MEX :MEX :TUN are replaced by :ALG :COD :IRI :LUX :POL :RUS :SRB :SUI .
    • I saw that was the tie-breaker in group play, but it said only for games played against each other (Canada and PR didn't play Venezuela).   Looking at the 2023 WBC, they ranked "lost in quarterfinal" teams by record (but Australia and PR "tied" for 6th with the same record). Then it groups them by placings in their groups (all 3rd place teams together, ranked by final record, all 4th place teams together ranked by final record,etc.). That's what made me hopeful that Canada would place higher than the other two since they won their group. However, they have Venezuela in the same grouping as AUS, PR, and ITA (lost in quaterfinals) even though they won their division.    Anyway, just have to hope for a Canada win or a close defensive loss, I guess. And some help elsewhere.
    • I believe it's that runs allowed over defensive outs calculation   So right now it's  >  >     We'll have to hope Italy's high offense shows up again while being defensive against the United States
    • Help me understand the tie-breaker if all of Canada, PR, and Venezuela lose their playoff games. They'd all be 3-2, but would Canada be ranked higher for winning their group? If not, what is the next tie breaker since Canada/PR did not play Venezuela?
    • (but I obvi want USA to win)
