Road Cycling COPACI American Championships 2023

They will be reallocated.

:USA :CAN :CUB :COL are pretty much guaranteed to qualify via the world rankings. Looking at the 2022 rankings, :ARG (36th), :BRA (38th), :PAR (42nd), :CHI (44th), and :VEN (45th) would have been in qualifying positions. :URU (53rd) and :ECU (55th) were the next closest nations.

So far in 2023, along with the top 4 Pan Am nations, we have :CHI (38th), :CRC (40th), :PAR (41st), :BRA (42nd) in qualifying positions while :VEN (52nd), :URU (54th), :PAN (55th) are the next closest nations. I think Argentina might be Costa Rica, they were 39th last week and then disappeared and were replaced by Costa Rica.

:ARG dropped back to 90th in this week's ranking list because the results from the 2022 Argentine National Championships are no longer included in the ranking.

:CRC climbed into top 40 ranking after strong performances from Sanchez Vargas in the Central American Championship.

UCI has the results up for the women's road race. Looks like it was a sprint finish with 25 riders having the same time as the winner and another 20 being 3 seconds behind. As mentioned before the world rankings (and world championships) will have higher priority so while the United States and Canada currently hold the quotas they will be reallocated. The reallocation priority is as follows:

1. :USA

2. :CAN

3. :CHI

4. :COL

5. :BRA

6. :MEX

7. :CRC

8. :CUB

9. :URU

10. :DOM

Based on the current rankings, Mexico and Uruguay would get the quotas if they remain the same, but with so many nations on the edge Uruguay is far from guaranteed to get the quota.

Nice 6th place for Nicolas Sessler :BRA:cheer:

Rather disappointing results for Vinicius Rangel :BRA (13th) and Alvaro Hodeg :COL (20th) though. Of course Hodeg only just returned after an awful injury, but judging by his shape on Sicily (somewhat decent) I had thought he'd do better. If he were in regular shape, of course he'd probably have been riding circles around everyone in this field, but then again, if he was in that shape he would probably not have been doing this event while the main season is in full swing :p

Here are the full results from the men's road race. Currently Canada and Argentina have the quotas, but they will likely be reallocated. Here is the top 10 priority list.

1. :CAN

2. :ARG

3. :URU

4. :ECU

5. :BRA

6. :CRC

7. :GUA

8. :CHI

9. :VEN

10. :BER

Based on the current ranking the quotas would go to Uruguay and Brazil, but both nations are pretty close at cracking the top 45 so the quota could move down the list.

    • That's so they can play in both venues in Canada.  Will mean that the UEFA Path A winner has to go from Toronto to Los Angeles and then up to Seattle.   Someone was bound to draw the short straw in that group since 4 of the matches are Central, but 2 are in Santa Clara.  Unfortunately, that's Algeria.
