This Iranian girl has Olympic medal. This is I think Kimia Alizadeh :d So this is imo not so big surprise.

EDIT: wow NO. This is not the same girl :yikes:

no not the same girl. that Kimia is recovering from her 5th surgery (no kidding 5 and she is just 20 )

still a good result for "this Kimia" she beat Williams which was already a huge surprise and her match vs Azizova was close until the last minute when she started to attack  blindly and gave up lots of points.

good tournament for our women's team so far. almost all of them under 18 and even if they lost they lost to eventual medalists (most probably gold medalists) looks like that joint camp with Serbian team really helped them. on other hands what a bad tournament for Serbia, there are lots of former world medalist in Serbia squad and still no medal ! next time don't invite the Iranian team to train with you :p

Disaster really. Only few wins. Four girls from this team have a world medal :facepalm:Still we have Nadica Bozanic in 63 tomorrow, but she is not in good shape this year :(

Really impressed by this young Italian kid  never saw him before.

that's the problem with Grand Prix competitions. because there is no room for new athletes outside of top 32 in World Ranking. we always see the same group.

he's only 19 years young...

he was European Youth champion in 2017 and last year his best result was the Grand Prix tournament in Rome (he participated in the -68kg class, thanks to a wild card), where he reached the quarterfinals (beating the Brazilian Edivaldo Pontes among others)...then he lost to the great Lee Dae Hoon (with a reasonable margin, 36-20)...

this year he won the Cyprus Open and the Africa President's Cup...

and now he's the first ever male senior world champion for Italy! :yikes:

p.s. and yesterday it was almost a perfect day for Italian Taekwondo, if only Roberto Botta in the -80kg didn't lose in the quarterfinals to the Greek guy (who then easily reached the Gold Medal match, where he's going to face Milad Beigi) by a small point, taking a kick to the head with less than 2 seconds on the clock...

Yeah the Greek guy was even a bigger surprise than Alessio . even though this time Beigi will destroy him in the final most probably.

speaking of 80kg we had some accidents in top half, World #1 Cheick Cisse got disqualified when he punched to the face of Taiwanese athlete accidentally and the Taiwanese guy could not continue the competition, so it was walkover for Hernandez of Dominican into the medal round. who lost to our Greek friend in the final. of course the Greek guy still deserves lots of credit, he beat Ordemann as well. he wasn't "just" lucky.

regarding Olympics Alessio is in the same weight as Botta and Italy has to pick one. normally you would pick World Champion without hesitation but Botta is also an  experienced fighter  and Alessio will lose a bit of his height advantage in 80kg. I assume the 2nd place goes to Dell'Aquila.

For Roberto Botta' s match i have many doubts about some decisions, in the first round they gave 6 points to the Greek for 1 kick to the head that probably touched the helmet twice in hundreths  of second, and in last 15 second there was a clear kick to the head that wasn't counted.... In the last 2 seconds it was a kick to the body that gave the victory to the Greek guys.

not sure if you know but refs (and humans in general) have nothing to do with those scores. that's electronic system. and if you kick to the face (and not the helmet) that's no point unless the center referee starts to count for the knockdown. and they do that only if you hit really hard.

refs are only important for cautions, punch points and turning kicks, the rest are electronic scoring system. (and of course the center ref always can cancel a kick for grabbing and other fouls)

well, last year Alessio competed in the Rome GP in the -68kg class...so, it's not sure he has to go up to 80kg...

now I don't know if he can still make that weight or not, so we can only sit down and wait to see what he and his technical crew decide to do...:mumble:

This is it, we will finish the competition with only 3 medals. 1 bronze , 1 silver and we will know the last medal later after 63kg final. quite a disaster. even though our federation obviously will blame the British organizers because of visa issues. 2 of them rejected visa and 2 others came to the competition very late , one night before their events. but that's not the only reason. our men's team wasn't that good.

and today we lost twice to Brazil and guess what both Brazlians made it to the semifinal. + another one at 87kg. which means 3 out of 3 for Brazil today. :yikes:

and what I can say about Mardani ? as I said before watching him is always like a torture . he always makes his matches hard. and this time against Maicon Andrade of Brazil. he waited 5 minutes to do something and when he managed to come back and tie the match, he lost it in golden round. if he fails to qualify through the "Grand Slam ranking" we have to chose between him and Mirhashem Hosseini to send one of them to the Asian Qualifiers and I will definitely go with Hosseini . I really don't want to see Mardani again. he can easily win the gold medal but he also can lose in the first round to anybody.
