Stage 8
Tortoredo Lido > Pesaro

giro-d-italia-2019-stage-8-profile-cdf72

At 239 km, the longest Giro stage is divided into two distinct parts: it begins flat for 140 km, following the Adriatic coast, before taking in a succession of undulations and punchy climbs for the next 100 km, as far as the finish. The route takes in a dozen ascents, including 3 categorised climbs. After crossing the Monte San Bartolo, the final descent ends 3 km from the finish.

Final kilometres

The ultimate 7 km are a technical descent all the way to the finish. The riders enter the town centre with 3 km to go, following broad and straight roads until the finish line. The home straight is 250 m long, on 7m wide asphalt road.

Tortoredo Lido

Tortoreto is a lovely and attractive seaside town on the coast of the Adriatic Sea in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region. Its population is 11 783. Tortoreto is divided into three parts: the medieval town in the hills, the seafront resort, usually referred to as Tortoreto Lido and three hamlets (Salino, Cavatassi, Terrabianca). Its origins are very old: in its territory there is also a Roman “Villa” that dates back to the 2nd century B.C. In the 1900s Tortoreto became a touristic town for very relaxing summer holidays thanks to the wonderful sea, the long beaches, and the amazing promenade called Lungomare Sirena. Tortoreto Lido also has a magnificent bicycle path immersed in the green and surrounded by beautiful hotels, confortable boarding houses and astonishing beach resorts ready to welcome thousands of tourists every year. The touristic soul of the town is confirmed by the recognition that Tortoreto gets every year: the Blue Flag Beach obtained twenty-two times; the Green Flag that is given to the best beaches for children; the Yellow Flag for the municipality that has a bike path(FIAB); the Green Spike for sustainable rural development.

Gastronomy

Tortoreto ia also famous for its well-cultivated hills where excellent wine and oil are produced. These products, together with clams that are collected by the fishrmen from Tortoreto, represent the typical products of this territory.

Even the pizzerias have a reddish dish, the pizza Rossini, with boiled egg and very tasty mayonnaise, which we think the famous composer would have appreciated. In the territory of Pesaro and Urbino, the best wine is the Bianchello del Metauro DOC. It is the wine of the taverns, presented without pretensions and instead represents very well our tradition and Colli Pesaresi Doc, in the vineyards located in a wide area of territory of the province of Pesaro and Urbino.Pesaro3.jpg

Casa Rossini, a modest dwelling, preserves the memory of one of the most illustrious citizens of the city: A plaque recalls: “The divine art of music smiled in this room when Gioacchino Rossini ws born.” In fact, Pesaro gave birth to one of the most famous Italian composers and musicians. Pesaro hosted the first Mediterranean Beach Games in 2015 if I’m not mistaken.

    • Basically, NOCs can attempt to qualify in additional events without gaining athlete quotas. For example, let's say a nation already qualified in the 4- and 4x, they can use the athletes they plan to send in those events and try to qualify in the 8+. That's where the extra coxswains will be used. If a nation intends to attempt to double-up they must let World Rowing know before the final qualifier regatta.   There's a good chance the quotas may not be used and will have to be reallocated. Looking at 2024, only  would have been eligible for the men while the women there's . With that said there's no guarantee they would have wanted to double-up their athletes.   In reality we are more likely to see the reverse, nations who qualified in the 4x, 4-, or 8+ doubling-up athletes for the 1x, 2x, 2-.
    • Hey everyone, how are you all?   Reading the qualification document here and the "3 quotas for additional coxswain" is very confusing to me. Can someone (try to) explain to me please how those quotas will be assigned?    Thank you so much

    • In a country as big as , the odds of Olympians being close to you are quite small; however, once I realized several months ago that even a state as small as mine hosts Olympians on occasion, I decided to scour each sport's calendar to make sure I caught them when they come around.  That led me to the middle of nowhere in my own state today, where there was a 4* Eventing competition, featuring a couple of Olympians and/or World Champion athletes.   Most all the athletes here were local or from USA, but there were a couple who compete for   or .  When we walked up, I had no idea what I was doing.  I thought I was in the right arena at the venue, but I didn't really see anyone there.  (There weren't any stands full of spectators, nor did I see any judges...it was time for dressage.). One of the ladies turned around and we struck up conversation.  Turns out I was in the right spot, and they were just on a short break.  She directed my attention to the upcoming athlete, Caroline Pamukcu.  Thanks to my research ahead of time, I knew she was on the Paris 2024 Eventing Team.  The lady we were talking with was the owner of the horse Caroline was riding.  After she finished with her dressage round, she got off the horse and was just standing there talking with her crew.  We went over and had a brief chat and one of the other ladies offered to take our picture.     I asked Caroline if she was aiming for LA28, and she said yes.  I've also since shown the girls and wifey the video from her Paris 2024 jumping competition.  Hope she makes the team this year!   (Caroline has a Gold Individual Eventing and Silver Team Eventing medal from the 2023 PanAms.  Boyd Martin from the Paris team was also there, himself having a WCh Silver and three gold PanAms.  Tamra Smith, who has a Silver from the 2022 WCh, was there as well.  Waylon Roberts, who represents  and has a PanAm Silver competed.  I saw a few more Dressage rounds, then watched them all do the Jumping.  Didn't get to see Cross-Country, but they'll have another similar event in October.)
