I can only talk about about Games I remember but Melbourne, Rome and Tokyo 64 all have good reputations from those who remember them.

68 was spoiled by the effects of altitude, 72 ruined by terrorism, 76 was just average and 80 and 84 ruined by politics and rampant drug taking.

Now to those I can talk about.

88 was a good Olympics but Barcelona was a fantastic Games. Atlanta 96 was great as long as you were watching on TV but the athletes and spectators were treated badly if you were there.

Sydney was just magnificent, Athens OK, Bejing good, London almost as good as Sydney, Rio was fine and it's not fair to judge Tokyo 2021 because of Covid.

My top three would be

1 Sydney

2 London

3 Barcelona

But it depends a lot of where you come from and the problems with time zones

I couldn't agree more...

only difference, my memory goes back also to L.A. 1984 and I must admit that despite the Eastern World's boycott, I have a special place in my heart for those Games (as it is for Sarajevo 1984, when it comes to the Winter Games) just because it was the first time I had the chance to discover so many sports I couldn't watch before (I was a 8-year young kid at the time...and I barely knew 5 or 6 sports).

The Summer Games that I have watched "live" are Athens, Beijing, London, Rio and Tokyo. My ranking is...

1. London 2012 - Simply the best, amazing atmosphere from the crowds, a top tier Hungarian Olympic team, many memorable moments

2. Beijing 2008 - tainted by very poor Hungarian results, but it had peak Phelps and Bolt, probably the most perfect Summer Games ever in terms of organization

3. Athens 2004 - great results from Hungary BUT we had terrible doping scandals and lost two gold medals, probably the greatest water polo match ever between us and Serbia and Montenegro in the final

4. Rio 2016 - unprofessional Games compared to the others, but it had Hosszú at her peak, the last appearances of Bolt and Phelps, Biles sweeping in gymnastics, etc.

5. Tokyo 2020 - COVID Games, it never had a chance to be great without the spectators

:finger:

this is "the game" ;)

    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
