2nd and last qualification pool starts this Friday! This time from Panama City. This qualifier features teams from the Americas, Asia and Oceania and features :ARG Argentina, :BRA Brazil, :NZL New Zealand, :NCA Nicaragua, :PAK Pakistan, and :PAN Panama. Unlike the 1st qualification pool, this pool is a bit more top heavy. On paper, Brazil, Nicaragua and Panama are the 3 clear favourites competing for 2 spots in the World Baseball Classic with Panama being biggest favourite of the 3. Personally I'm hoping for Panama and Nicaragua to qualify here since they are countires where baseball is the number 1 sport in the country but they haven't had qualification success in past tournaments.

October 1st Scores:

:BRA Brazil 4-1 Nicaragua :NCA

:ARG Argentina 0-11 Panama :PAN F/7

Huge win by Brazil. Nicaragua looked pretty sloppy on the other hand so it'll be interesting to see if they can rebound if they end up playing again. In the other game, Panama clearly showed why they're the class of this qualifying group.

October 2nd Scores:

:PAK Pakistan 0-12 Nicaragua :NCA F/7

:NZL New Zealand 1-4 Argentina :ARG

Pakistan and New Zealand are eliminated from qualification. In the first game, no surprises as Nicaragua is in a completely different tier than Pakistan. Much different story in the 2nd game though. New Zealand was shutting out Argentina through 6 innings but had a complete meltdown in the 7th inning and allowed Argentina to score 4 runs. Nicaragua and Argentina will now play for the right to play for the final qualification spot. Brazil vs. Panama will be the first qualification matchup.

I think Nicaragua were going to boycott the 1984 Olympics in support of the Soviet Union but the people were so keen to see their country in the baseball demonstration event that the president had to back down and allow the team to go to LA.

Argentina almost beat Nicaragua :yikes:. But Nicaragua still hangs on 6-5 and will play the loser of Panama vs. Brazil. Looks like it's Panama and Brazil's qualifying spots to lose.

    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
