Byron McDonald said on the commentary to expect a team that could be as high as 23 or 24 swimmers to be announced likely tomorrow but maybe later tonight.

I really do hope that in events where a Canadian didn't hit the A standard but are younger and a possibility for future world championships or Olympics are part of the team.

The issue with this is they have to be invited by Fina....looking at the 2016 lists...not many were. 2020 has less quotas and universality is not capped like it was in 2016. I highly doubt it sadly.

With the end of swimming trials, we begin with athletics on Friday.

Events with Olympic ramifications to look out for Friday:

400m hurdles women: Noelle Montcalm, with a SB and win will move into 38th in the WR (top 40 qualify)

Men's decathlon: Taylor Ehrhardt begins his comeback, with a lot of injuries the last few years. Will need a 600+ PB to get the standard to qualify.

400m men: Osei/Misner Daley need the standard to qualify, both off by just over half a second

100m women: Bingham needs the standard atp to qualify. She is just 0.01 off from her SB

100m men: Whoever wants to make the team needs the standard. Smellie is currently in a WR spot, the other two De Grasse/Boateng not competing.

Long jump men: Jared Kerr is back, 8.14 PB, will need 8.22 to qualify

800w: Butterworth/Bishop/Kelly need good times (2:00) or less and a top 3 finish to clinch a spot

Women's steeplechase: Yee/Butterworth with a top 3 finish and timings around their PB (9:31) should get them a WR spot, but they should honestly go for the standard to guarantee their spots.

Was looking at B standard swimmers:

Mack Darragh is 3rd in the rankings of non-qualified swimmers in the 200m butterfly. 5 qualified through the OST in Rio.

Eli Wall is 6th in the 200m breaststroke. 4 qualified in Rio.

Would swimming Canada bring them now that they announced the team?

The announcers re: Nathaniel Mechler, car broke down on the way from presumably Toronto to Montreal in the middle of nowhere. Due to covid regulations, cannot ride in the tow truck, so he hid in the trunk of the car for 45 mins so he can make the nationals. What dedication!

Women's 800- Lindsay Butterworth wins the Canadian championships with the automatic Olympic qualifying time 1:59.19, However, Melissa Bishop did not look her best, hoping she can improve before the Olympics. Bishop was also right on the standard.

Third was Madeleine Kelly, and she will improve her rankings to 39th out of 48th, giving her some breathing room.

I didn't see the race but Bishop-Ngriau is really good at peaking at the big events. Hopefully she's on that trajectory again.

    • Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...
    • Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.
