Uggggg, Polis outfit :dunno::wall: Hope it does look better in motion, than on pictures. Mixed reactions i've read so far. The press there seem very optimistic with the whole performance, but the fans who loved the song seem to think that the staging is gone overboard. :dunno:

Okay semi 2 is done with the first rehearsal, so some comments.

Sure qulifiers - Ukraine, Australia and Serbia. They were a sure thing before and the staging just solidified it, simple, but strong. I don't see what was so different in Ukraines performance than their national final, as for it to go really fast from 8-10 to third in the bookies.

Probable qualifiers - Bulgaria, Latvia, Belgium, Norway - We were the opposite to Ukraine in the betting department today, going from 4th to 10th.. Like i said above, i hope our staging looks better when pieced together on the show, because it has gotten mixed reactions. Poli has said that are going to tweak some bits, as to build the song from the beginning to the end and i really hope they know what they are doing, because we have a history of flopping at Eurovision (many times). I have more reservations than before..:dunno: Belgium really benefited today and i would be really surprised if it doesn't qualify, very underated song this year. Going last in the night, an upbeat song, likeable singer, who owns the stage, good choreograpy. There is no way this isn't qualifying. Latvia and Norway have good songs and good singers, so not going overboard with the staging is a real plus.

On the fence qualifiers - Poland, Israel, Lithuania, Belarus, Georgia, Denmark - Much more even semi-final than the first in term of countries that can qualify. Anyone of them can qualify, but can also miss out. Poland has a good singer, but the staging seemed boring to me and i have a feeling they will get lost in all the commotion. Israel benefited from the staging, which looked very compatible with the song, so i can see this surpising. Lithuania, Belarus and Denmark were unremarkable, but anyone can squize in at this point. Georgia were the surprise of the day, as their song were in the bottom of every fan poll i have read this year, but the staging got a very good reaction in the press-room, so i don't know what to think about it.

Chanceless of qualifying - Switzerland, Macedonia, Albania, Ireland, Slovenia - It will be a miracle of one of these qualify for me, though Slovenia had a good staging, but the song is just so awful. Nicky Byrne is a popular name, but i don't know how familiar the general Eurovision public is with him to qualify solely on his name and there is nothing in his performance that speaks qualifier. Macedonia is too Balkan, Albania is too boring and Switzerland, well they are just Switzerland. I don't know how they manage to send every year the most bland songs (except Seblater, who was amazing), though i've got to say that i'm strangely attracted to Rykka, whenever i see some video with her, but girl can't sing.

Qualifiers for me - Ukraine, Australia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Israel and Lithuania.

Yeah, I wasn't too keen on Poli's outfit either, but it doesn't distract me from the song, and it shouldn't stop people from liking it anyway because she slayed.

Okay, I know I'm saying this because she is my number 1 this year, and I really want her to qualify, but honestly I haven't seen the other 41 rehearsals, so I gotta get to it. xD

    • http://i.imgur.com/gLJZbix.jpg   Honestly football is just on another level. For other sports, an expanded field or creating multiple host cities likely only works with baseball, cricket and maybe basketball, and only in very specific countries.
    • No streaming for the games in India. I contacted IOC they just sent me a list where the games will be shown live.    Last games we had the Olympic channel and YouTube showing the live coverage for regions with no media rights. This time sadly no such schedule.   So much about making the games accessible to all...

    • I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field.
    • Dunno if this is geoblocked, but this is from our weekly comedy show Saturday Night Live
    • I don't buy that she's doing this just to start the race if she thinks she won't be competitive.  We'll probably know more after the training run and far be it from me to know how that's going to work with a torn ACL, but if she knows she can't do it, she'll give that spot to another skier
    • And this with relatively small fields, so lots of nations with no skin in the game.
    • It is by far the biggest ticket sales of any sport at the Olympics - even 70% full stadia means about 58 matches with 30-40,000 odd crowds - even the athletics rarely sells that many tickets (usually across 18 sessions full to the brim, the equivalent of about 36 matches of 30-40,000.) and no sport other than track and field comes close. Moreover, it tends to create an easy win for 'spreading' the Olympic bounty, and rarely requires any meaningful new build, unlike Athletics. You are talking, when you add in VIp ticket sales and the usual venue add ons, generating revenue in the $200-300 million range - Revenue which, unlike most of the money from the Games (TV rights, sponsorship, branded merch), goes to the host organiser, not the IOC.   The thing about being an Olympic fanatic is that we often get here precisely because we rejected to some extent or other the overwhelming soccer culture that exists everywhere outside North america and the antipodes. So we aren't Olympic football's target audience. Casual fans who like football - of whom there are a LOT - are.   I do wonder, in all sincerity, if Brisbane might be better doing this with cricket than soccer - or if LA would have been better doing it with baseball.
