Volleyball/Sitting Volleyball

Don't mean to be a cynic, but our men's volleyball team looks to be toast at the WL, three heavy loses at home to start. There are a lot of new players on the team, perhaps this golden generation of the last two quads is over.

On the other hand, the women seem to be improving and handily beat the DR, and they look to be solidly second in Norceca.

Not a good start for Canada. For us to have any chance at qualifying to the Olympics we need to be ranked at least 11th. These losses don't help our chances.

The women have had a good start, but they'll need a few upsets to reach an Olympic qualification position.

Canada up to 14th in the world rankings. We'd need to go up at least 3 more spots (4 if Russia gets unbanned) in order to be in a decent position to qualify to the Olympics.

Canada's women's sitting volleyball team is playing an exhibition tournament in the Netherlands right now in preparation for the World Cup in November. 4-0, with sweeps over Ukraine, France, Great Britain (As expected), and a four set win over Italy. They play host-nation Netherlands, and reigning Paralympic Champions United States tomorrow.

Finished off the exhibition with one win, and one loss. Started the day with a 3-0 victory over Netherlands, and finished it with a 3-2 loss against United States (USA's best player in Heather Erickson wasn't playing though)

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
