2:27.83 in the girls 200 breast for 13 year old Shima Taghavi. Finished 6th in the final.

Thoughts on the overall performance of the team?

One bronze medal overall is a bit disappointing but not surprising. Russia returning didn't help matters. Would've had a couple more medals otherwise. Ultimately, it's typically the 18 year olds that win the majority of the medals and the Canadian 2007 born class isn't is pretty weak overall. Ethan Ekk also didn't decide to compete and he surely would've been in contention for a few medals here. The 2008 class is pretty good but a lot of them weren't quote ready to contend for medals. Dawson and Kryger were the only swimmers that I thought would be in contention and unfortunately Dawson was either sick or injured for most of the meet so that didn't help. Not sure how the relays would fare but some 4th and 5th places aren't too bad. Even though she didn't medal, thought Clare Watson looked great and had nice time drops in all her events. Could be a contender for the next 100m butterflyer. Taghavi, Kim, and Sememyuk also had nice time drops in some of their events as well.

Overall, I would expect next year at Pan Pacs to be better. Will be interesting to see if swimmers like Dawson and Kryger, who are good enough to make the senior team, would opt for the senior pan Pacs team or go for the chance to be a star at a junior pan Pacs on home soil.

Commonwealth Games Team:

Men:

  • Oliver Dawson
  • Josh Liendo
  • Benjamin Loewen
  • Antoine Sauve
  • Ben Winterborn
  • Lorne Wigginton

Women:

  • Sophie Angus
  • Julie Brousseau
  • Ella Jansen
  • Madison Kryger
  • Delia Lloyd
  • Kylie Masse

Don't know whether it was Swimming Canada or the Commonwealth Games Federation that decided the 12 athlete quota but it's way too few.

It was the CGF who provided Commonwealth Games Canada an overall quota, which they had to distribute amongst all sports.

No shocker that LA 2028 scheduled the women's 800m free final the same day as Mcintosh's best event the 200 fly final. They want Ledecky winning that 800. Dirty play. But she has now said she will shift to the 200 free now to still accomplish her goal of winning five golds. This may actually benefit our relay in the end.

    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
