Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

Recommended Posts

@bestmen Look, I've been reading your comments regarding Russia for quite some time, and I don't want to bite my tongue this time.

First, context matters. I agree with @copravolley. It’s not an insult to say that people who don’t live near Russia often underestimate what this war actually means for Europe. Out of the three of us, I can say with certainty that I feel the most directly affected by and concerned about this war.

In the same way I wouldn’t share my opinions on Africans and the conflicts on their continent, or lecture Palestinians about the war in Gaza, it’s reasonable to listen first when Europeans explain why this is not just a political disagreement that happens to block Russian athletes from competing, but an ongoing war of aggression that doesn’t only affect Ukraine, but also countless other countries located nearby with a long and dramatic history of communism and Russian influence. To make it clear, you're absolutely entitled to your opinion. However, you have repeatedly pushed the same narrative about the supposed injustice towards Russian competitors.

Second of all, the claim that Russian athletes have nothing to do with politics is blatantly wrong. It's a lie, and you know it. Countless Russians are actively supporting the crimes that Russia is committing on Ukrainian soil, advocating for further military operations, and show little to no remorse. Many Russians supported Putin throughout his presidential campaigns and continued doing so even after the invasion. Just look at their public statements made over the past three years. They are expected to align with the state’s narrative. That’s not an individual moral judgment, it’s how the system works.

Major Russian sports clubs are directly linked to or derived from the military. Hockey players wear war symbols and slogans on their jerseys, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Russian sports and politics are two sides of the same coin, closely related ever since the state began pouring money into centralised doping programs and sporting propaganda. Bringing up Netanyahu or Israeli doping is pretty much just whataboutism. If there is proven, systematic wrongdoing in sport, it should be addressed through proper investigations and sanctions. That does not magically erase or excuse Russia’s actions, nor does it justify pretending this war doesn’t exist when it becomes inconvenient.

and if Russia decreases the price of Gas , europe will forget ukraine ...it all about money

For 50 years, we lived without gas from the USSR, and it was one of the best periods in European history, so we'll manage. It was a huge mistake by our politicians after the fall of the USSR on early 1990s, to allow themselves to be bought off with their dirty money.

I hope it never happens again.

For me all of the entire of Russian society is a great disappointment. In the early 1990s, they fought for Yeltsin- who, of courss, failed, but that's no reason to allow themselves to be manipulated by Putin- a man worse than even Brezhnev. In my opinion, it would be much easier to reach an agreement with the USSR than with today's Russia, because the USSR and its ruling Communist Party were much more predictable than Putin and his gang, who now is rulling in Moscow.

The next ban country will be :Venezuela , they refuse to give their petrol/gold to USA

You keep writing about various countries from completely different parts of the world that you know nothing about: Gaza, Russia, Venezuela, etc. Maybe you could also tell us something about Cambodia or Nepal  You hate the USA and would even prefer the devil as their enemy, but there are countries to which Russia has done much more harm than the USA, for example, all of Eastern and Central Europe: Poland, Czechia etc. Just understand that not everyone thinks the way you do.

Saying this war doesn't concern africains is wrong , for exemple life becomes expensive here because the trade with Russia is ban ...they force you to buy western products more expensive x100

    • Vittozzi- Wierer in 2019 or even some later. They are still not close friends and do not train together: Vittozzi has been training alone since last season, Wierer with the men's team for 4-5 years and the rest of the Italian team still separately - Vittozzi trained with this second group until she suffered an injury in the autumn of 2024.
    • So far, the Russians haven't even reached the Dnieper River, so don't worry. Poland has the same problem as Ukraine, in that there are no major geographical obstacles to the east: mountains, lakes, rivers, etc. The terrain is quite flat, but to reach Warsaw in a few days, the country would have to fall apart, the army would collapse and the authorities would have to escape from the country.
    • Probably 0% but in 1939 Germans reached the outskirts of Warsaw after only eight days (the border was more to the east than it is now i.e. they had less ground to cover). The ugly truth is NATO would most likely bide their time in response so the entire eastern Poland would be a battle field for a while.
    • What was the Italian conflict? I can't quite remember.
    • And is there any chance that the Polish president would have escape within the first 2-3 days of war? Probably 0%. In 1939, the authorities escaped, but after an attack from 2 sides, the first being the German attack.
    • Hmm, and were they wanted to capture Kyiv in three days? Since middle of 2022, their run has been slow, so I don't think they'll be using any rapid maneuvers on the future. They surprised Ukraine at the very beginning on the war and were close to success. Zelenskyy only needed to flee the country in the first 2 or 3 days of the war. And Russia could have counted on this happening, because Zelenskyy wasn't an experienced politician or soldier and could have do however they wanted. In my opinion, Zelensky's role in Putin's plan ruined everything for them- he, as a populist and inexperienced man, was to escape from Kiev in the first few days of the war. Then Russia would have put in one of its own- Yanukovych? and Europe and the USA would probably have approved that.
    • Fortifications could only work for illegal immigrants but not against drones. We're wasting missiles worth millions of euro to shoot down drones worth 10k. It's anyone's guess how quickly Russians would reach Vistula River if the invasion came from two sides (Kaliningrad & Belarus). It would be days and not weeks...
    • Shocking news 😔 We just saw him competing 2 days ago in Annecy.
    • Yes, and Ukraine is very important to Putin- far more important than the Baltic states, Georgia or even Poland. Without Ukraine, the restoration of the former USSR will be impossible for Putin. Another thing is that with pro-Russian Ukraine, Poland will have its entire eastern and northern border (Kaliningrad) with unfriendly countries except Lithuania, so it will basically have to militaries the all entire eastern part of Poland and build various fortifications there.
