Is this the selection meet for short course world champs?

yes and no...

I mean, the core of the team was already determined on the basis of last season's World Champs and European Champs results.

then we have a time table for all the swimmers who didn't qualify before.

to be precise, all the Budapest 2022 medallists and the Rome 2022 Gold medallists are already qualified by right, then 2 or 3 swimmers earned their ticket in the recent world cup races + last week's meet in Genua and finally those who swim fast enough in this meet also qualify.

but the required times are almost impossible to get (basically it's the 8th ranked time of last year's Short Course World Champ), as our federation doesn't want to have a big team flying to Australia because of the economic struggle they're living.

for instance, this morning only Pilato (women's 100m Breast), Cerasuolo (men's 50 Breast) and Ciampi (men's 400m Free) swam the qualifying time.

and this afternoon only the top 2 in the men's 100m Free and in the women's 200m IM went below those crazy marks.

and Pilato and Miressi were already qualified through last season's events (however a few swimmers would eventually fly to Australia because of the relays, too).

Australia used to use the time to make the top 8 at the previous global meet (Worlds or Olympics) as the qualifying time for the next one and Japan and Great Britain use similarly harsh QTs (even the US couldn't fill all available spots with some of these QTs). Worlds this year was the first in a long time Australia used the FINA QTs. It was horrible to see swimmers left home that would've been taken to the Olympics if they swam under a different nationality that uses the FINA QTs.

we always have not so strict rules...we can't afford to leave home any decent talent...

normally all the global medallists from the previous season are prequalified to the following year's main event, then we use the time table (but looking at the 16th ranked of the last World/Olympic meet) and still our coaches have some discretional margin.

this time, as I wrote, they have to keep the team quite small because of the economical situation and the flight to AUS being very expensive.

we'll see what our coaches do after this meet.

the whole group of swimmers of the men's 200m Free are individually outside the qualification mark, but most likely they will all qualify to the SC Worlds through the Relay (today there were also another guy @ 1.44. and 4 guys @ 1.45.)

Silvia Di Pietro might also be taken into consideration because she almost matched the required times in the W 50m Free and Fly despite being sick this week, because of her experience and because she's a 25m pool specialist.

the last session of the championship is just underway.

Ilaria Cusinato is a strange case: she swam the required time in the W 200m Fly at the Berlin WC stage, but that wasn't a sanctioned meet.

in Genua and here she didn't match any required mark, but she got close and won both races with comfortable margin.

then she swam the required time in the W 200m IM, but she was only 3rd in that race.

I'm really curious to see what the coaches are going to do with her. Personally, I think she deserves to fly to the SC Worlds.

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
