Afghanistan beat England today at the World Cup. Netherlands are also in the last 10. Neither, to the best of my knowledge, a former British colony.

Cricket fans love citing Netherlands as a competitive nation, but I’m not sure they’ve played a competitive game yet at the current ICC World Cup.

They haven’t faired much better in baseball, but the sport is almost certainly more global, even if it too is limited to a few hot spots.

Generally its rare to have an upset in longer format like ODI and Test because there enough time for the superior team to apply themselves if they are behind in a match. Upsets occur frequently in T20 because a match can turn on a brilliant individual performance. In 2022 World Cup, both Ireland and Scotland beat West Indies. Ireland later defeated the eventual champions England. Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan and lost to Bangladesh by measly 3 runs. Similarly, Netherlands defeated South Africa which South Africa had to win to qualify for the semis

quoted from insidethegames website "The elimination of the fencing ranking round is confirmed for modern pentathlon at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics"

what does this mean, any idea what would be the new format? ..only fencing bonus round?

most likely, they will get back to a shorter version of the old fencing round (being the athletes divided in smaller groups for the semis and the final, it wouldn't take much time to have a single round robin...with 12-(wo)man groups, it's only 11 rounds of 1 minute-match on 6 pistes, let's say 55 mins in total)

Not to mention the fact that World Champions or the equivalent (champions trophy) have come from every continent, not something Baseball could ever dream of - The Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania all have produced global winners. The problem with saying "It's only British colonies" is that former British colonies span 5 continents, contain a quarter of all the NOCs in existence and over a quarter of the entire global population. Unless you're soccer, if your sport is 'only' doing well throughout the British colonies, it's doing damn well!

    • yeah I know    I mean it wasn't a different team specific for that sport. it was the same CC team participating in both sports.
    • It is run by a different federation though
    • from what I heard , Iran has registered to participate in Alpine, CC skiing, SkiMo, Skating (they didn't mention which discipline ) and ... (this one will be surprising ) ... Curling    Curling is not a sure thing yet, the NOC has to approve it. the team is very new. I mean very very new, only few months ago they gathered few people to start the sport  you can't lose 100-0 in Curling, right ?    anyway it will be first time ever Iran participating outside of FIS disciplines. ( I didn't count Ski orienteering in 2011 which was the same as CC)   nobody cares about winter sports here. therefore finishing last won't have consequences. they can afford sending very weak teams. (which is not the case for the main Asian Games)

    • 11 medals out of 15 athletes. for whatever reason  we sent an incomplete team of 16 athletes (only 1 left for tomorrow) I wish I knew why  I can guess though   the result is indeed very good in such a competitive sport but lack of talent was never our problem in taekwondo. it was always there probably much more than any other country.    but the problem is the transition to the senior team. most of previous junior world champions never even made the senior team. (the new federation is doing better in this regard though)
    • Maybe my analogy was bad. I meant a team points competition based on individual placements in each event.
    • But why? Honestly it should be about athletes.
    • I actually feel like it has the potential to be good change. The new brand identities might open up more possibilities for merchandise. I also think the ISU could create a compelling team standings competition similar to the constructors cup in F1.   Plus, it might add a degree of “apolitical-ness” to the top level international short track, during a time where that’s been a hot topic in international sports (in general).    Maybe it won’t work at all, but I’m open to seeing where the ISU go with this.
