Fencing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

Not mathematically guaranteed yet, but I believe Canada has pretty much qualified in men’s team sabre. United States has a 80 point buffer on #5 Italy. Canada has a 71 point buffer on #16 Poland, and no other Pan American nation is among the top 16. There’s only 64 points at maximum available per WC, with only two stops left to go.

No… Europe has two spots, while Pan America only has one. Plus, the competition isn’t yet over. I’m sure @phelps will post the qualifiers after the competition is over ;)

I think that Lucia Martin Portuguese also won a quota because there is a 41-point difference between her and Ilieva and at the WC you can win only 32 points

competition isn't over, but it's over for quota allocation. The only factor that can affect it is tomorrow's team competition.

This changes nothing from what we have now, but if I'm not mistaken there are theoretical chances for Spain to take the quota if for example Algeria or Mexico will fall under 16th place and there'll be some reallocation spots.

Just wait for tomorrow's team event: Spain and China still have a (very small) chance to get a team quota, and Algeria missing out on a team (again a small chance) would lead to Boudiaf getting the individual quota.

The only sure individual so far are:

:GRE Gkountoura, :CAN Brind'Amour, :UZB Dayibekova

in my opinion there will be few teams and Algeria will have no risk of dropping below the top 16

    • Juniors were there recently and the track was awful   Although that's not necessarily bad. Tracks don't all need to be fast, a slow track (like the horribly slow one in Poland) simply favors a different style of athletes. Training a lot there doesn't really give much extra advantage though, not like in sliding sports where of course as host country you make sure your athletes know every single meter a year before the Olympics.    And to get back on topic: speed skater Elisa Dul broke her tibia and fibula in a training fall yesterday and will obviously be out of the OQT and so the Olympics.
    • The PSL race in Davos was (yet another) insult to a beautiful discipline. The red course (which was actually yellow) had several holes and an exposed ice sheet, which made the athletes slide way too long, causing DNFs or massive time losses. The only positive note is that Caffont won despite racing on the more dangerous course in the final

    • Not just Erin Jackson, but several others like for instance Joep Wennemars. Think of it what you may, it’s all down to the way the rules are written up. The rationale is probably to prevent that a rider that falls is automatically relegated to the B group.
