Slalom Canoeing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Are you sure, that the quota place in women's K1 from the European games goes to Poland, in (the unlikely) case that they don't qualify at the World Championships?

Theoretically speaking: What happens, if Germany qualifies in the women's C1 at the World Championships but fails to qualify in the K1? I'd argue that the quota place from Krakow goes to Germany in the K1, then.

Can anyone tell me how many paddlers will get to compete in the extreme kayak events in Paris?

Plenty.

Basically Every qualified athlete in Canoe Slalom is eligible to enter the TT (preliminary round) of the Extreme Kayak. Every NOC can field 2 athletes to the start (so both qualified C1 & K1 athlete per gender). The format is still not official, but it should be like at the EG, with best 16 from the TT advancing to the main race (however, there still a possibility to have one more round (Heats) so even 32 paddlers can progress from the qualifiers) - from then it is classical 4 paddlers heat with top 2 (correctly passing the track) advancing to next rounds etc...

Why the big difference between the points total - the leader in 1 event has over 20 points but the leader in the other has only 5?

20 points for 3rd place, 5 points for 16th place

The Internal qualifiers are composed of 3 races

this weekend World Cup in La Seu d´Urgell, the World Championship in Lee Valley and the World Cup Finals in France this October.

Points accumulated through the 3 events, The paddler with highest amount of points will go to Paris next year (Assuming we will earn the quota ofc), In case of points tie, the tie-breaker will be a) the most 1st place results across the 3 events, b) the most Top 3 results across the 3 events, c) the most Top 10 results across the 3 events, if still tied then d) the paddler who eventually won the quota...

To bring this one back: I still disagree with Totallympics having Poland listed as qualified in women's K1. It's not quite that simple. Yes, a federation can only win one quota place at the European Games. But in spite of the European Games taking place first, quota places at the World Championships are distributed first.

Meaning, in case that Germany wins a quota place in the women's C1 at the World Championships but fails to win one in the K1, the K1 quota place from the European Games goes to Germany and not to Poland. Granted, this may not be important, as the chances are high, that both Germany and Poland are going to qualify anyway, but still, Poland is not yet 100% qualified. Surprises are possible, especially in such a difficult sport as canoe slalom, and Germany might need this quota place from the European Games. ;)

    • And this with relatively small fields, so lots of nations with no skin in the game.
    • It is by far the biggest ticket sales of any sport at the Olympics - even 70% full stadia means about 58 matches with 30-40,000 odd crowds - even the athletics rarely sells that many tickets (usually across 18 sessions full to the brim, the equivalent of about 36 matches of 30-40,000.) and no sport other than track and field comes close. Moreover, it tends to create an easy win for 'spreading' the Olympic bounty, and rarely requires any meaningful new build, unlike Athletics. You are talking, when you add in VIp ticket sales and the usual venue add ons, generating revenue in the $200-300 million range - Revenue which, unlike most of the money from the Games (TV rights, sponsorship, branded merch), goes to the host organiser, not the IOC.   The thing about being an Olympic fanatic is that we often get here precisely because we rejected to some extent or other the overwhelming soccer culture that exists everywhere outside North america and the antipodes. So we aren't Olympic football's target audience. Casual fans who like football - of whom there are a LOT - are.   I do wonder, in all sincerity, if Brisbane might be better doing this with cricket than soccer - or if LA would have been better doing it with baseball.
