I assume NCAA supports indoor sports which helps to boost some of these winter events. Practicing half-pipe tricks isn't much different than gymnastics but canoeing or alpine skiing are outdoor sports so a different story. The lack of depth is probably linked to the decline of escaping poverty through sports. The same happens in boxing or combat sports in general. I presume all cycling-related hype died after the Lance Armstrong scandal.

Shiffrin isn't very well known in though, alpine skiing is extremely niche outside of regions that have a big ski industry. It's a sport that's relegated to a second rate streaming service the vast majority of the time, so outside of the Olympics alpine skiers are almost unknown to 99% of the country.

To be fair, being 'not very well known' and still raking in millions of dollars in sponsorship deals a year....nice

That is the perk of being an athlete in America - even when you participate in a niche sport there are still a lot of fans.

Maribor has finally been removed from the calendar for next season. The problems and uncertainties there are just too big. Whether the races will return again in 2024 or later is open.
