I'm gonna say that medals in Athletics, Beach Volleyball and Swimming are very possible. Maybe we have a outside chance in Gymnastics with our male athlete and combat sports due to low number of entries in some categories (?).
He retired in 2015 after the 4 Pan American titles, moving on to other things (he owns a skating school, is a commentator for SporTV, and won the TV show Exathlon in Brazil). Which means, of course, that we will have a new champion for the first time this century (not to jinx it, but I think Gustavo Casado has a some chance of keeping the gold medal for Brazil)
I'm hopeful that at least in athletics, swimming and gymnastics we'll be able to watch all of the events. Other than that, judo, volleyball, handball, table tennis, skateboarding, canoeing, archery, weightlifting, modern pentathlon and equestrian are the sports I want to watch, but I'm not sure all of the events will be streamed, especially in table tennis and modern pentathlon.
Volleyball will have a big coverage for sure, Peru loves this sport. On the other hand, I remember Handball wasn't broadcast in Toronto (except for the argentine channel), and I fear the same next year, even though this is a qualification event for Tokyo.
I said it months ago. that Iran FF was told by AFC to pick one team and they picked the boys team just because they believe they have more chance for medal there.
Same with Brazil. Our senior women's team is very good, but I don't even know if we have an active youth team - even the qualification was achieved by the senior team, which is really strange but just shows the lack of competitions for youth teams in women's futsal.
It's a little mind boggling that FIFA doesn't really shows many interest in women's futsal, but hopefully that is changing.
Apparently Brazil rejected the girls quota last minute. Wikipedia says it was because "they chose to compete in boys futsal" but that makes no sense because in beach handball, rugby and field hockey there are some nations that will play both genders! plus, Brazil didn't qualify for any other girl team sport, so they aren't binded by the "only one team sport for each gender" rule that all countries except us have to follow.
The same happened to Iran girls, is there some special rule for futsal that I don't know about?
It's a little ambiguous, but this article from FIFA website basically says that a nation has to pick Men's or Women's in Futsal. For instance here: "Iran decided to play the Men's Tournament, and Japan accepted. Thailand ended up third and were the next eligible team." https://www.fifa.com/womensyoutholympic/teams/eligible/index.html
So my guess is that Brazil and Iran weren't allowed to enter both teams.
This are the most important games after the olympics (a bit better in overall level than pan american), a pity that it will be hard to watch.
Agreed, but I think it should have some kind of qualification for team sports - like in Football, for instance, in which 20+ teams is really unnecessary.
Amazing results for Mexico with 132 golds, 30 more than second place Cuba and almost beating their own record (which is 138 golds from 2002 I think, but Cuba did not participate in that edition).
Disappointing performance from Colombia, which I expected to do much better at home. Maybe they should have saved the effort from South American Games...
No surprise here, , and each qualify a men's and women's water polo team. I wonder if will compete with its men's team after withdrawing at the last minute last time.
Interesting fact is that Colombia won the men's tournament and maybe won't even qualify for Pan Ams - Brazil and Argentina are usually the qualifiers from CONSANAT zone but who knows...
Mexico still looking strong with 86 golds, 40 more than second place Colombia with 46 (Cuba has 38). 1st place seems very likely even if Mexico doesn't have a great second week.
Also gets me thinking how well Mexico will do at the next Pan American Games compared to nations from the region, considering Cuba's decline.
Today's last match in men's handball between Colombia and the Dominican Republic has apparently been cancelled. Either the Dominicans didn't show in the end, or they couldn't arrive on time, just like Puerto Rico's 3x3 yesterday
Probably they couldn't arrive on time?
But unlike 3x3 (which was simply given a walkover), the Handball match is currently rescheduled for July 30th - probably because this tournament will qualify for the Pan American Games and it would be terrible to lose a match for a reason like that...
