and Greco , but keep in mind Greco is less predictable because it's not only about technique, you can win matches by just being very strong physically 60kg I think Rodriguez (VEN) will benefit a lot from being the top seed. he has an easy road to the quota. he will face MEX and probably COL. won't be a huge surprise if he loses to any of these guys. I'm not familiar with the Mexican wrestler but he is probably somehow good. the QF match between CUB and Hafizov determines the quota. Hafizov who is 36 beat the Cuban at the Pan-Am Games final but he is getting older, Cubans are always dangerous ... for a change this time I don't pick the Cuban, so 67kg on paper it looks easy for Sancho (USA) but he beat the Chilean guy narrowly last weekend, so there is a chance for an upset maybe ? in bottom half I expect ECU and COL battling for the quota in the SF, Montano is a bit old, he used to be very good. he beat Hora 2-1 last weekend, kind of interesting that it's possible to have exactly the same semifinals this weekend ! I think the same guys win again 77kg, this is the most interesting weight, most of the favorites wrestled last weekend and we had some surprising results in top half I think Pena (CUB) and Joilson (BRA) will decide the quota, the Brazilan surprised Pena and pinned him few days ago, that can happen again but I think Pena learned his lesson. at the bottom half we have the biggest name of all, the great Arsen Julfalakyan who just decided to wrestle for Argentina ! at the age of 36 he wrestled in a tournament few weeks ago and did OK (not great though) he will face Kamal Bey, the best American Greco talent in the QF and most probably either VEN or COL in the SF. any of those 4 guys can win the quota. it will be interesting to know that Cuero (COL) beat Kamal Bey last weekend. still I think that was just an accident. Bey is a very good wrestler. he is explosive, can score against anybody but can also lose big points against anybody. my picks 87kg I doubt anybody beats Daniel Gregorich in the top half. still Woods (USA) might be a challenge for him in bottom half I see COL and VEN in the SF wrestling for the quota but Vargas (MEX) won the quota last time (didn't go to the Olympics though) I think maybe he has a chance too. I say 97kg, with Cuba already qualified it's a great chance for the rest Kevin Mejia is 99% locked for the quota. I can't see him losing unless some accidents happen for the bottom half, I think USA and VEN decide the quota. Vera (USA) won 5-3 last weekend, so I say 130kg, different format since we have only 6 wrestlers I think it's very clear that only 4 guys are wrestling for 2 quotas, all 4 of them will advance from their groups to meet in the SF. Acosta is very boring and annoying but he can gets the job done by 1-1 or 2-1. Schultz can throw anybody. I think these 2 guys will qualify but Perez (VEN) and Soghomyan (BRA) can do something. but still most probably

I assumed that still even a 50% Dehsi should qualify easily

taking a look at freestyle draw first 57kg, balanced draw, surprisingly no cuban wrestler in top half four guys has a realistic chance COL, VEN, CAN and MEX. I think RBY from MEX and Tigreros will wrestle for the quota. there are 2 or 3 NCAA wrestlers in bottom half but I think it will be PUR vs USA in the final. Richards won't be happy to face Cruz in the SF. but still my picks 65kg, still balanced draw Nick Lee is the weakest member of US freestyle team, still good enough for the quota. I think only Gomez (MEX) might be able to threaten him. just maybe the QF match between ARG and CUB will most probably decide the quota. I would have picked Destribats but he was terrible few days ago and almost lost to Bahamian wrestler (American though) I think Valdes has the upper hand since he didn't wrestle last weekend. BAH guy is here, another NCAA wrestler, might have a very small chance. my picks 74kg This weight is wide open with no clear favorite in both sides. but there are some NCAA wrestlers representing other countries. I'm not familiar with some of them, they might be very good. in a normal day I would pick Garzon without hesitation but he was terrible last weekend. he lost to a guy who later lost to this DOM guy. so on paper DOM should be the favorite, still when it comes to the Olympics, Cubans wrestle differently. also can't write off this guy from URU, I believe he is American too at the bottom I think the winner comes from the last quarter, CAN, PUR or VEN. my picks 86kg, I can see 6 guys with a chance and 4 of them is in the bottom half I think top half will be decided between COL and PUR. I think Ramos has more chance because the Colombian wrestled in Pan-Am Champs last weekend at the bottom half, Moore (CAN) has an easy route to the SF but there are 3 clear favorites in the 4th quarter. it's really hard to pick one between these 3 and Moore also has a good chance because he hast to beat only one of them. Valencia (MEX) is the brother of American Zahid Valencia but since he is new into this weight, my picks are 97kg top half is much much easier, I think it will be between VEN and DOM, hard to compare them, it looks 50/50 the Cuban guy is the favorite but he wrestled last weekend and had a good match vs Kyle Snyder. which might give a chance to Randhawa (CAN) and maybe Lacey (CRC). my picks 125kg I barely even know anybody from the top half. it's PUR's quota to lose, I just saw he beat the HON wrestler only 2-1 last weekend, so there is a chance for HON's quota. maybe at least Amar Dheshi is a head and shoulder better but he didn't wrestle much recently (injury maybe?). I'm not really aware of his current shape. still he has to win 3 not-so-easy matches to qualify. American guy of Jamaica, the old guy from VEN and the Cuban (the worst of the Cuban team). my picks I know I gave too much credit to Cuban wrestlers. I mostly rate them high because of their past. their freestyle program is somehow dead. I don't think they are going to win 4 quotas with 5 wrestlers.

If you mean the draw (which I doubt) the answer is no but of course the competition will be streamed on UWW website (like all of their official competitions), which is not free anymore. no "final" or repechage this time, only the direct elimination competition with semifinals (Olympic Qualification matches) later at the evening session

The brackets will be out in few hours. I will write something after that.

Hi Fabio and thanks a lot for nice comment you already answered the question, some wrestlers are already qualified and this is not like Gymnastics or Athletics where you can simply ignore the qualified athletes and make another ranking for the rest. we had the other format back in 2008 (1 quota available for each continent at that time and continental Champs served as the OG qualifier) and for example you could finish 3rd losing to the best guy in the draw (already qualified) and someone lucky could qualify by being in the other side and finishing 2nd. since then they changed the format and created separate continental qualifiers. personally while I understand their concern I agree with you that this is a demanding sport. it's not shooting or archery, they can't be in their best shape twice in 10 days. and some (most) of these guys cut weight which makes things even worse. there is no perfect solution but I think the correct one is definitely not the best. it kills the prestigue of continental championships. after all luck is an important factor all the time. I would go with continental champs serving as the qualifier plus some extra matches for the quota if necessary

I'm no expert in women's wrestling but I except Mexico to qualify a couple of guys at least. I think your top guys rested for the Pan-Am Champs which may help them a lot this weekend. but they also lost the benefit of being seeded. so luck will play a big factor in the draw for them. I think your best chance is 57kg and 86kg freestyle. Zahid Valencia's brother is good but he just moved up to a new weight. and at 57kg, I think you just have to hope you don't get USA in your side of the bracket. and you will probably get one in Greco too.
-
Honduras has an OKish guy at 97kg Greco and since Cuba is already qualified in that weight, and USA and VEN will be on the other side of the draw (because of seedings) I highly doubt Mejia loses the quota this time. but beside that, I believe the rest of the quotas will go to big Pan-Am countries. unless other small countries have some NCAA American wrestlers who can do something. I know some of them do.

Table Tennis Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
MHSN replied to Totallympics's topic in Table Tennis
and it seems the city of Sulaymaniyeh in Iraq will host the West Asian qualifiers. couldn't find a date but apparently that's somewhere in March too interesting that none of those World/Asian federations bother to put that in their calendar. -

Olfati won the silver in Vault here + 30 Olympic Ranking points. I think he just needs one more good result in next two World Cups to qualify. still nothing is guaranteed though. which will be huge if happens, Iran never qualified anybody in this sport (had gymnasts long time ago in pre-qualification era) he is doing fantastic ,considering we don't even have a proper federation for 2 or 3 years. he is on his won without receiving any kind of support. -
Yep, Iran will never win an important semifinal in football or any kind of football. and they were terrible today, playing like cowards specially in the 3rd period, sitting back hoping for some luck. Brazil dominated the 3rd period and deserved the win.

Mehdi Ahmad-Kohani who finished 3rd in Rings qualification yesterday is not going to participate in the final because he is facing a two years ban for failing to report his whereabouts in past few months/years. looks like he didn't know he has to fill some forms. thanks to FIG, our gymnastic federation is/was a mess in past 2-3 years. there is nobody in charge to teach basic things about doping to these kids. nobody to even receive FIG's emails. he was going to mandatory military service and didn't check his personal email for a long time. -
when nothing else works you can always call the GK to save the team , he scored another beauty which was the winner goal when the score was 1-1 so it will Brazil vs Iran and Italy vs Belarus in the semifinal. https://www.instagram.com/p/C3qXFIfNdY8/

Wrestling Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
MHSN replied to Totallympics's topic in Wrestling
to lower the costs, UWW is having Continental Championships just one weak before the Olympic qualifiers. except for Europe of course. people in Europe always cared a lot about the European Champs. while I do understand their reasons but they could have done it another way, but they made a mess, and ruined the prestige of continental championships. what's the point of having them in the olympic year, just to fill up the calendar ? per rules. countries have to participate in Continental Championships to become eligible to participate in the OG qualifier with the same number of wrestlers. they don't necessarily have to send the same guys, but most countries don't have enough budget to send two different teams for the Continental Champs and the qualifier. so it's mostly the same team for two events. this led to something very weird and interesting tonight, Yasmani Acosta from Chile (he is Cuban) won the 130kg gold medal in Pan American Champs tonight without winning a single match and it wasn't like nobody else entered. there were 6 other guys, he had to win 3 matches to win the gold but all of them happened to be a walkover , he lost his first group match, but from there nobody else showed up on the mat to face him. he is a tough guy. can drain your energy, those wrestlers probably thought it doesn't worth wrestling him now, one week before the main event. (no idea why the final didn't happen Oscar Pino is already qualified and is not concerned about the next week event) here is the result. "VIN" means victory by injury https://arena.uww.org/weight-category/show/1eeb687a-ec52-6a1a-b325-370640f43f22/print/complete-results -

what a pity our guys did good in general but beating World #2 Germany was too much to ask. I really hope they don't end up #1 among non-qualified teams in the ranking. that would be really hard to swallow, being this close. the key match was vs Portugal in the group round, If they had taken their chances, they would be in a different path, far from tier 1 teams. these guys made lots of fans here by beating Japan at the Asian Games few months ago. that was a miracle, unfortunately they couldn't repeat it here. -

I believe it's not decided yet. there will be a draw -
I had to open the link to see which one it is cuz Iranian GKs together scored 3 goals today I just hope they don't underestimate UAE in the QF, the last time one of our teams underestimated the host team, it ended up very badly in Doha couple weeks ago.
-
we do care, we even had our trials (parts of it) for non-Olympic weights already. some of our good (but not great) wrestlers decided to stay in their non-Olympic weights rather than moving up or down to Olympic weights (would be a desperate try most probably) and Albania becoming the host was a terrible and worrying news for them. and non-Olympic weights started to exist since 2016. that year UWW had a WCh only for those weights. 2021 was a special case because of COVID. they already signed the contract with Norway. My point is they never plan a full-fledged Worlds in the Olympic year. with only 6 weights in the Olympics and limited number of quotas (thanks to IOC) lots of good wrestlers will miss the Olympics. a World Championship in non-Olympic weights is just the right thing to do. of course it's hard to find a host for that.
