  1. there are something like 3 millions Afghans living in Iran (legally or illegally), so I guess that's the answer. most (if not all) of their Taekwondo athletes grew up here. my point is, he probably had both options. when he didn't make the Afghan team, he used the plan B.
  2. well. you can't be luckier than this Abbasi guy he even lost a round to Nepal. but managed to win some close matches and in the SF, he lost the 1st round and was trailing in the 2nd round too but then he landed a big big kick and the HKG guy probably didn't notice the count, therefore didn't say " I'm ready" to the ref and lost by RSC. I know some people here think this refugee idea is cool and nice but it's not. this guy Abbasi was representing Afghanistan until few months ago (I mean even years after the fall of Kabul, it's not like he fled the country when the savages of Taliban arrived) Afghanistan can send only 2 athletes here (like everybody else) they have two much better athletes in 58kg and +80kg. so this guy probably thought OK I can apply to be in "King Tommy team" and found a shortcut to the Olympics. if anybody with a refugee status can participate, then each country should be allowed to send so many as they want. I mean if you can't make the national team , you can always easily make the refugee team. you don't have to be a real refugee. King Tommy accepts everybody.
  3. that was even much worse, he was calling them V I E, I mean he was saying "Vee ai, ee" not even Vietnam Chinese commentators are usually this bad when they try to speak English. I had seen this before in other Taekwondo competitions in China.
  4. I was also surprised by that late penalty but I wasn't paying too much attention to that specific match. so I can't say for certain
  5. there is no results page (as far as I know) I just finished watching the quarterfinals
  6. quota fights M 68kg vs / vs M 80kg vs / vs W 49kg vs / vs W 67kg vs / vs Chinese Taipei losing to Hong Kong was the huge huge surprise today. which created a very good chance for the Afghan athlete (refugee now) to qualify. TPE also lost in the women's side. that KSA girl also has a very good chance to qualify, I assume that will be the first ever quota for a Saudi girl (not counting wild cards)
  7. that was expected actually. Rafalovich has a good rank mostly because of his old results, their 80kg guys (both Jaysunov and Salaev) had more success recently, Jaysunov was only few seconds away from qualifying through the Grand Slam. beside that 80kg will be much easier for then to earn the quota.
  8. Asian Championships Entry list https://arena.uww.org/weight-category/1eee02d6-2759-659e-9ff0-c71089015e53 the list is still incomplete. no UZB , no KGZ yet. but PRK is there which means they will participate at the AQT too. making things harder for everybody. India team is also very incomplete and from what I know wrong. (this is their AQT list, not the AChamps list) from what I see some countries are sending their B-level wrestlers because of the obvious reason. but those big names already qualified are mostly here.
  9. maybe, just maybe we are reading it wrongly. no way WT can do such a thing, that's like demolishing the Oceania qualifier. because I highly doubt we will see more than 3 competitors in any of those 8 events. maybe max 1 or 2 I think only when it comes to "reallocationg the quotas" they won't give it to the next guy if there are less than 4 competitors and that re-allocated quota will go to the World Ranking.
  10. The Mexican guy pinned Paalam to the ring by some wrestling techniques. he finished that bout on pain. I'm not surprised he didn't continue but that means that piece of crap TKM boxer (who beat our guy completely unfairly) is going to the QF without doing anything.
  11. yeah we are becoming a superpower in winter sports Canada and Norway should watch out
  12. I don't think so. as far as I understand they are not being considered as the same team. the IOC just uses the same term for both of them to confuse us
  13. oh shit, we will have the same drama again looking at the ranking and seedings it's again very much possible to have that match right in the first round. hopefully not
  14. nope we had them back in 2020 too
  15. I'm watching the next day draw and that made me confused Russia qualified one male athlete at the Grand Slam (V. Larin) and now they have M. Khramtcov trying to get the 2nd quota but then I saw G. Gurtsiev at 58kg but apparently he is representing Belarus now, kind of weird to move from one AIN to another AIN
  16. that was electronically scored. not by human.
  17. completely useless just in case if someone withdraws later or tests positive for doping which almost never happen in this sport
  18. there wasn't even a single doubtful call in that match, not sure what you are talking about. feel really sorry for the Bulgarian girl though, she will not forget this defeat for so many years
  19. today in Vehbi Emre tournament in Turkey https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4QmxSVoKsd/ this is the semifinal between Mokhtari (blue) and Saricicek (red) . both guys obviously got disqualified after this and their QF losers wrestled instead for a place in the final. Saricicek had a huge huge surprise before this and beat the World Champion Makhmudov. it was also our internal trials for the Olympics (first for the OQT) Mokhtari beat his main local opponent in the QF but after his disqualification the other guy took his chance and won the gold, which means he is going to the Asian OQT. You always benefit from someone else's dumb mistake
  20. my point is. if you watch any sport for the first time. after few hours. or maximum few days you will have a pretty good idea about the officiating. you don't need to read the rules to know who is better or who will get the better score (except for close calls) but in boxing it's just random. I know some refs are corrupt and favor certain countries but I mostly think they are just very bad and don't care. they randomly give a 10-9 to someone. the officiating was always bad in amateur boxing and it's only getting worse and worse
  21. taking a look at the brackets and I can see at least 6 former/current Iranians (and I think there will be 2 more for the 2nd day) no other country has that number in Euro qualifiers surprised to not see Mehdi Khodabakhshi here . for some reasons I would only cheer for him (and maybe Beigi)
  22. and now I missed the days when we couldn't watch this shit and just had the final result and I seriously mean it. even the commentator(s) were surprised by the verdict of Shahbakhsh's fight. I know I am biased but the English commentator said it so many times that how the hell the bout is not finished after the 2nd round. I seriously hate watching this sport , even when I watch Rhythmic Gymnastics or freestyle skiing (sports i know nothing about) I can guess who is getting the better score but in boxing, you can think guy A completely dominated the match but then guy B gets all the scores from the refs.
  23. two more wins tonight, which means 5 out of our 6 boxers survived the non-live-stream era. and from now on if they lose at least we can watch it
  24. Yeah, that's the problem. I understand and agree with 1 athlete per weight class rule. the current format says 2 (out of 4) per gender. you can have a full team only if all of them finish in top 5 (or in some cases 6) of the world ranking which is really hard. lots of athletes in top 10 of World ranking will miss the Olympic because their NOCs already qualified 2. Taekwondo entered the Olympics back in 2000, at the time it was all Korea, IOC made this rule to prevent Korea from winning easy 8 gold medals. but this is not the same anymore. Korea struggles to even qualify lots of athletes.
  25. yes the field is weak because of the obvious reason of limiting countries I agree with your general idea , but I would drop the Grand Slam completely. it's a waste of time. also 4 Wild Cards are too much. no room for charity with only 16 athletes per weight. (it's not like Judo with millions of quotas) from what I head WT is going to change its ranking system, it will be 2 years period (which makes more sense than 4 years) and if my memory serves me well they are thinking about a new qualification system, something like Judo, awarding all quotas by the ranking. at least that's a proposal they are thinking about. btw if some people here are happy about the restrictions in this sport (which is already developed in all continents), what would they say about the same idea in athletics or swimming ? I mean you can enter just one swimmer in all freestyle events, that sounds terrible, right ?
